birdseed... contam?
    #1254579 - 01/28/03 08:06 AM (14 years, 2 months ago)

My first experiment with birdseed is nearing 100% colonization (I think). Several areas of the jar look funky to me, but I do not know if it a contaminant or just my inexperience with birdseed. What do you think?

EDIT: There is no nasty smell coming through the filter.

Thanks -

looks strange to me, my jars are usually pure white - sometimes i'll get the mycellium piss (yellow metabolite) in them. I can't say for sure, but it looks like a contam - wait it out a few days, and if it's growing it's contam - if not, smell it and make sure it seems safe (waft the smell to your nose with a fanning motion of your hand, do not stick your nose in it).

Looks to me like you used a little too much water and got a bacterial contam. I would wait and see if the mycelium overtakes it.

The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Lewis
