Quick Dunk Question

A Guy I know wants to dunk his cakes before letting them fruit or casing them. He is going to birth them into a ziplock bag (I think they are microwave safe) filled with distilled water that was microwaved for a bit and then let cool. After 12 hours in the fridge, he is going to open the zipper a bit and let the water drain out. From there, some will turn to casing some will fruit. What is the best way to make sure that the right amount of water was reabsored. The Hippie Dunk tek says squeese the cakes a bit, So I was thinking I would do that after I drain the zipplock bag, is that enough or will I have to actually pat them down with a paper towel, and what is the most sterile way to treat dunking in general?

Only tried it once, with good results...
...almost exactly as you describe it there. I think you've got the idea anyway Swabbed the inside of the ziplock first with a cotton ball dipped in h202, filled with chilled micro'd water (leaving no air pockets) and dunked in fridge overnight (12 hrs roughly). No squeezing of the cake was done, just patting firmly but carefully with paper towels - as you suggest - to soak up the excess. Fully colonised cakes are fairly contam resistant provided you are reasonably sterile...
Remember being pointlessly anal about sterility in the first attempt
....but Biohazard level 4 isn't necessary i found out LOL

Awesome. That H202 everyone keeps on talking about, what is it, where do I get it, how do I make it, what does it do? I did a quick forum search and found this guys' website where he explains the benefits, but he's a doctor or something. What do growers think of it? I mean I'm basically asking for someone to write a little FAQ paragraph about H202 and it's uses and how to make it. Cool. Thanks for the answers on the dunking thing.

H2O2 is hydrogen peroxide. It's used to sterilize. It doesn't sterilize as well as rubbing alcohol, but it is really good for mycelium because it doesn't seem to hurt it very much (whereas rubbing alcohol does). It's used frequently in a 30:1 ratio (30 parts water, 1 part H2O2) when combatting cobweb mold on casings. Most H2O2 is sold as a 3% solution, so when you buy a bottle you'd put 10 parts water and 1 part H2O2 into a spray bottle. In this use it's a precaution against contamination when you dunk your cakes, and it's a good choice because it isn't terribly harmful to the mycelium.
Hope this helps you out.

Why put them in a bag?

There is always a need to be over sterile! Lately, I fucking hate the idea of mold. I mean like I've become a neat freak, everything looks like a mold trap. Its like a new way of thinking. Hehe. Yeh I'm gonna go for the bag cause of the air thing. I'm going to get peroxide tommorow cause I think Walmart is closed.

The hippie uses zipplock bags, because he would rather drink a blue moon than wash lots of jars!!! There disposable too.

TheFlom, some people get really crazy with with lysol when they innoculate...and god damn if a pet happens to enter the room when they do it. But if they get a first flush, they will dunk several times without worry. They will usaylly use an old soup container drom the local chinease resteraunt.

How badly do you think a chlorine and water solution to about 25:1 solution would be if a FOAF accidently sprayed this on the top of his casing to be put over poo which is not fully colonized yet? Would it evaporate before the mycelium got to it? He only lightly sprayed it before realizing he switched the H2O2 and chlorine bottles the day before. Hope its ok. Also, he realized a small gathering of white dots on a couple spots of the poo, only sitting on the very top. Would the FOAF have to start worring about this if he sprayed it with h2o2, I know he'll keep an eye on it.

The cart guy at Wallmart told me, the best results come when you have enough knowledge and tries under your belt where you do not have to worry. He told me about over analyzation, over sterilization, and mass amounts of anal retentiveness. Turns out, read, try, read try...RELAX. Have fun

And peroxide also breaks down into oxygen + water when it is mixed with water, as well as combating contams...
