"FIGHTING CONTAMINTATION" Just a thought
    #1253849 - 01/27/03 02:25 PM (21 years, 2 months ago)

OK, well this may be considered completely retarded by some, but I think it has some potential, or I could be wrong. Well, this idea came to me in Biology when we where swabbing the school with cutips and putting them on are agar plates. After a few days mold, and bacteria (basicly contamintation) started to grow on the plates. Well, a few days later we put neosporn and 2 other different things on different infected area's. Well, it seemed to slow the growth down immensly... So, here is my question... Could this process of using neosporn or peroxide be used to fight off, or prevent contamination on a casing? I relize that you wouldn't pick mushrooms off this area, but is this an idea, or would it just be a waste? Imput would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Not sure about casing layer, as the petroleum might fuck with the fruits (rosecomb), however it could maybe be used as an agar additive?

you will rarely see bacterial contam in a casing.
moulds are much more common. mould grows in the same manner as mushrooms. by thin mycelial threads. on a plate these threads cannot penetrate too far because the substrate is all surface area. mould in a casing grows deeper and neosporin would not reach the vast majority of the fungal body. i have tried peroxide and it sucks as well for fighting mould. it just cant penetrate

in commercial mush ops they do fight mould because it does work, kind of

depending on the size of the casing cover exposed MOULD with SALT. the mycelial network will excrete water trying to balance the salt concentration of the inside with the high concentration on the outside. this essentially kills the mould. you will notice the surface of the casing above infected parts will become wetter because of this excreted water.

DO THIS IF YOU HAVE A CONTAMED CASING
i have found nothing else that comes close to fighting contam than this.

in commercial ops they use this method

Actually, there are lots of bacteria in a casing. We just don't call them contams because they aren't detrimental, in fact many of them stimulate fruiting and keep molds at bay.

You might find it useful in agar, but I would just use some anti-biotic from spore works. Actually, I'd just use peroxidated agar and deal with the extremely low contamination rate.

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.

Peroxidated agar is my new best friend. I found out I was pouring it in a little too early. And using a little too little. Now i'm able to do open air transfers, no sterility minded (experiments). I still use my glovebox for my transfers, but i've been toying with the peroxidated agar, and out of 10 dishes that i did transfers to in open air, on my bed - I got 1 contam. Hard to beat that.

For what it's worth: I just fought off a tiny area of Trich with a bunch of salt. That salt got wet pretty quick as the mould went Hypertonic. Good times. I fucking hate Trich..... I must have some growing somewhere in my room, the moment I slip up, it comes in and colonizes like a mutherfucker.

what i meant about bacteria was that you will rarely see a bacterial contaminant colonize your cased substrate like a mould would

Now it's time to take that p. agar to some peroxidated grain, and then do a peroxidated grain to grain transfer etc etc....woohoo! Sorry, starting to stray off-topic.
