Perlite Vs Verm in Casing Layer
    #1254312 - 01/28/03 06:32 AM (13 years, 10 months ago)

Well I think, I can genuinely say that using perlite in casing works better than leaving the cake whole. I made a 70/30 perlite/peatmoss casing for my straw innoculated with millet from a mycobag. Its the fifth day in fruiting and I can count thirteen pins ranging from tiny to about an inch, there is also an enourmous section of rizo growth that hasn't started to pin yet. I have pictures, but they will have to be developed first. I really think this perlite works better than verm. Don't know why though. Oh yeah my casing is only 6" square so I really didn't expect much but now I'm thinkin I may get 14 g dry per flush easily.

as far as i know, wet vermiculite gives moisture to whatever is attaching to it, while wet perlite gives moisture even to the air around it, so yeah, thats why people use perlite as a bottom layer on cakes to sit upon them.

but i dont like perlite to tell the truth, because it can attract contams in no time.

hope the best of luck and a gr8 flush!

How can you say perlite will contam? It is completely non-nutritive like verm and will encourage the mycelium network to absorb more water as perlite will not store it, like verm does. This means you must have higher humidity and more mistings to ensure proper levels of moisture, but your fruits will have more water to use for growing. I find that a straight perlite casing layer works better than straight verm, and with the addition of peatmoss I am extremely pleased with my current casing. Pin count above thirty-five and still going strong.
