First Grow and Looking for Advice
This is my first grow, and I am using the PF-TEK. I used 21 1/2 pint jars and inoculated 7 with PE, 7 with Golden Teachers, and 7 with B+. They seemed to colonize fairly quickly. Currently 10 jars are completed and in my FC. I am including a list of some of the steps a took that I have a little uncertainty about.
- I am planning to dunk and roll 14 of my jars, I skipped this step for 7 of the 10 that have finished. My method involved birthing the cakes to a ziplock bag, filling it with water, and placing it in the fridge for ~12-24 hours. Then rolling the cakes in verm which was sterilized in the oven for 15 minutes and let cool for 5. Should I worry about cold shock? Should I skip the fridge?
- My fruiting chamber is a shotgun type with holes on a 4 inch grid on all 6 sides. I used ~5 inches of saturated perlite, with a dry top covering. I mist with a water-bottle 3-times a day, there is a room fan one foot from the box set to fan for 15 minutes every 6 hours (12am,6am,12pm,6pm), and a light set to be on between 6am and 6pm. I placed the colonized cakes on aluminum foil on top of the perlite. My Acu-Rite Hygrometer/Thermometer reads between ~74-76 degrees Fahrenheit, and my humidity stays at 98%. Is my temperature OK? Is my Humidity OK? My lamp is right over a Plexiglas top that I fashioned to my Rubbermaid container should it be further away? Just starting out, is 12 hours of light and 12 without OK or should they have less light in the beginning? Is a standard CFL adequate? Should I be worried about the accuracy of my digital hygrometer?
- All of my jars are showing great progress except one which seems to be a dud, it and two others seemed to be duds, but the other two started growing eventually. None of my jars are showing any signs of contam or bruising. Given this, how long between fully colonized and in the FC until edible quantities of shrooms? I see growth, but nothing looking like a shroom yet.
Any advice is helpful. I have been a troll for the longest time, but this is a great community that I want to be a part off.

Cold shock is not needed, that temp is perfect, and those lagging cakes should start soon. Are any of the cakes fruiting?

I don't dunk in the fridge, but I know some people do. Drill more holes. 1/4" hole every 2 inches all six sides.
100% + a week to consolidate, then maybe 10-14 days until harvest.
-------------------- You make it all possible. Doesn't it feel good?

The point of dunking cakes in the refrigerator is not to "cold-shock" them, which isn't done with tropical species, the point is to keep the water temperature low to inhibit bacterial growth in the water.
It's the same reasoning behind dunking a tray or tub under cool running water.

What gave you the idea to put dry perlite on top of hydrated perlite? That's pointless.
Many digital hygrometers apparently don't give accurate readings at a high RH. Yours may not be giving you a good reading. BUT if you followed the tek and have that much properly hydrated perlite than you're good. Hygrometers are totally optional with tubs.
A CFL bulb is great:
Warm White - 2,700 K White - 3,000 K Neutral - 3,500 K Cool White - 4,100 K Full Spectrum - 5,000 K Daylight - 6,500 K
You want a 6,500 K bulb or close to it. Larger sized CFLs can be found at specialty lighting shops.

If 1/7 of your total inoculated jars contamed I would be worried about your other cakes!
Best of luck. ~P~

My first pins appeared today!
- I read the reasons for dunking in the fridge on the forums, but I was wanting to know if it was a bad idea, because of the cold shock issue.
- Sorry if it was confusing, none of my 21 jars are contaminated. One appears to be a dud, but no contam.
- I am currently using a standard house bulb cfl. Is that inadequate. I will do some research later, when I'm not high, but thanks for offering some clarity.
- As for the top layer of dry verm, I have read it in several Pf-teks, but I agree it seems pointless. It definitely still gets wet.
- I have a new issue. Lately the Alabama heat has been making it hard to keep my closet between 74-78. The hottest it has got is 83, but has averaged 80 the last 2 days. Should I be concerned about this, or are those temperatures reasonable? I try to keep the room at 74, but it is tough to do in my part of the country.
