Air Intake
    #1249033 - 01/25/03 07:37 PM (21 years, 1 month ago)

I just birthed my cakes, dunked and shocked them for a day, and cased them. I cut half of them into slices and crumbled the rest to fill in the gaps. Unfortunatly I ran out of casing and only toped the mycelium with 1/2 inch. I'm using the perlite humidity tek and a heating pad under the rubermaid container to maintain a temp of 77 degrees and 90% humidity.
When should I start fanning the mycelium.

So you have 1/2" of casing material covering up the cakes?
How deep is the substrate?

Is the mycelium breaking through the casing layer?

You want high humidity when you initiate pinning...95% or higher.
Then drop the humidity down after you get pins.

You would give then light and fan them several times a day when you initiate pinning.

Yes there is a bit of substrate not covered at the surface.
So should I hand mist it now or after the mycelium grow completely on the surface?

I think you better go buy some more casing material and cover that up.

Then let the top casing layer colonize.

Does it need to be sterilized?
I have a lot more verm/peat but I don't have time to pressure cook it like I did with the current casing.

nuke it in the microwave.
5 minutes...stir it up...add more water if needed...nuke it again for 5 minutes.
Let it cool down in the microwave.
Spray the air with Lysol.
Wash your hands with Anti-bacterial soap.
Check the moisture level...if its good...apply the casing layer.

good luck!

Jesus you weren't kidding.
It's been 2 days and I have mycelium all over the surface.
Is it too late to recase it?

Perlite is amazing I got 97% humidity. I had to see it to believe it. My thermometer/hygrometer slid down the side of the tub and there is water dripping everywhere. I guess I should put some vasoline on the top.
