They do best outdoors in a tropical climate.
They need lots of rootspace or else they will suffer in the long run.
Howeve, it needs to be a tropical zone.
Zone 10 would probably work.

I got one growing fairly well indoors that I'm planning to move outdoors.
I'm definitely not in a tropical climate, I figured I'd grow it for the hell of it.

Sunlight, lol. I grow it in my sun room. It's only one year old and it's soon to be transplanted outdoors, then I'm either gonna let it die or take a cutting or 80.
I'm not even attempting to grow it really, just letting it live is more like what I'm going for here.

@Dan, do you know how much sunlight HBWR likes? I wanna germ my HBWR and R.corymbosa seeds soon. My morning glories loved sitting in full sun, and I planted them at the base of a fence, which they are taking over.. but now that summers here it seems like it is TOO much sun... pale leaves, and the flowers are wilted by 9am.
Do you think any of these vines would do better in filtered patio light? I have a big old bird cage, wondering if they would like it in there on the patio if I put a bunch of dirt at the bottom.

I am raising a bunch of these in my mini-greenhouse, and Dan is correct for sure, they do like a lot of humidity. I haven't been able to get any of them to survive more than a month or so outside of a super-humid greenhouse environment. If their demands are met (humidity) they grow like crazy, only problem is they're going to outgrow my little greenhouse soon.

I had mine planted all last summer in full sun, just make sure they get plenty of water.
I've noticed the same with MGs getting burnt in the Southern sun.
My outdoor HBWR was this big at 3/4 of a year.

Nice vines CactusDan!
If only it flowered sooner (did yours? how long did it take?). I don't know what people will make of that all over my fence, at least the morning glories are a common, somewhat obvious ornamental. The neighbors might think HBWR is a weed and pull it all out! We have lots of annoying vines around here, especially when summer rolls around they go insane.

It tends to take about 2 years, sadly mine bit the dust this winter
HBWR has HUGE leaves when it's outdoors and probably would be taken as less of a weed than MGs.

its a weed, though in warmer areas...this family knows how to invade...
they can do ok in lower humidity, but be sure their root shave enough moisture to make up for their incredibly large leaf area (aka massive water exchange). i grew them outdoors in SW canada, zone 9, in summer where it was 30-40C and quite dry. they were water hogs but did ok once i watered at first signs of wilting. died in october though when temps go down too much.
they grow in S. Florida, and i would think S. california by the coast where its more mild...thats a guess though. S. florida for sure is ok.

They seem to hate southern California's super-dry weather though, IME... I haven't been able to get them to survive unless they're in my little greenhouse.

Dallas seems to be humid enough right now for HBWR. We keep around 70% humidity and it took a week or so to acclimate my HBWR to outdoors. It's fairly small still as well.
