homemade 5 gallon, 4 tier desiccant chamber (pics)
    #12541456 - 05/11/10 03:37 AM (14 years, 8 months ago)

figured i'd post a few pics of a desiccant chamber SWIM made, using a 5 gallon bucket (lid optional), 12 wood screws, 4 wire hangers, approx. 2' x 2' of screen material, a bit of plastic cling wrap, and a few cups of damp-rid.

another plus is, it's also able to be turned into a decent fruiting chamber later, if the need arises.

all SWIM did was, screw 4 screws vertically spaced about 2 1/2" apart, in 4 equal sections around the circumference of the bucket, which is the resting places for the 4 tiers of the hanger/screen material.

next, unfold 4 wire hangers, using pliers or whatever, until they're straight.  then bend them into somewhat decent circles, matching the interior of the bucket, so that they rest LOOSELY onto the woodscrews. REMEMBER:  the buckets interior may be slightly concave!  so bend each one to the right shape, so you can get them out easier later!!!

next, wrap the excess hanger around each other so that it holds its shape.

now cut 4 equal squares of screen material, lay the circular hangers on top, and cut them to the shape of the circle, leaving about an inch of overhanging material.  next, bend the excess material over the hanger a few times along the circumference, and voila!

dump a few cups of damprid in the bottom, put your shelves in, with what you need dehydrated, and cover the bucket with plastic wrap.  optionally, cut a hole out of a bucket lid, and rest it over the plastic wrap, for a better seal.

You will find "cracker dry" doesnt happen in a desiccant chamber.
Hands down, when you are able, get a dehydrator.
Never fails.

yea thats what SWIM does.  he has a small fan, and a rack set up, that dries to NEARLY cracker dry, then puts em in the chamber.  i mostly like it because i can put a shit ton of prints in there, to finish dehydrating for packaging.  the last pic with the shrooms on the top tier, is really just to show size comparison... they were freshly picked in that pic!!!

thanks for the input!
