constructing a mini-clean room
    #12539896 - 05/10/10 09:02 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

i've got a spare bedroom i do all of my mycology related projects in right now.

however it is also my laundry room.

as of right now i use a glove box. i've got a squirrel-type blower, and plan on purchasing all of the required materials to build a 12X24 flow hood.

what i'm wondering is what the best way is to go about building a mini clean room within my room?

i was thinking tarp over the carpeted area and maybe hanging up tyvek walls.
what should i do for entry? i would hate to have a shitty entrance and invite all kinds of contams in.

myco.alchemist's input would be great because i've seen a few of your posts talking about things of this nature.

Ah, that explains it.  Typical know-it-all noob.  We get a few thousand just like you register here every year.  They try a few grows, fail miserably and then after a few months or one bad trip, go back to sniffing glue, never to be seen again.

We have a basic pf tek that's idiot proof enough for noobs to get fucked up with their friends.

Mycologists on the other hand grow for the love of growing.  They want to experiment with various species, substrates, and fruiting environments. They'll move on to isolate strains, attempt hybridization, and in general treat cultivation as an artform, rather than a chore that must be performed as a means to an end.  They'll work twice as hard for a ten percent gain, just for the love of perfection.  These are the ones who will isolate strains, not the dumb fucks who treat mushrooms as a drug, or even worse, a pathogen, as if mushrooms cause disease.

I put some cheap linoleum down in my "room within a room". It is nice and tidy, and easy to wipe clean. If you go through the trouble to build a proper flowhood you really shouldn't have to worry too much about keeping this little room isolated. I would think that the main thing would be to eliminate drafts. The flowhood will keep your work area sterile as long as you use it properly. Tyvek would probably work fine for walls.

You just have to layer it, kinda like to do to refigerated coolers and such in stores, mines cheap, but you dont really need one if you have a flow hood

I put to solid layers on either side then 2 strips in between them, along the edges.

Sorry for shitty pics, but hope this will give you some ideas.

Yea, if you plan on using a flowhood in there, it doesn't need to be completely sealed, IMO.  If it were me, I'd probably build some "theatre" type flats, faced with tyvek, stand them up with some simple jacks, put a couple flats up, perpendicular, as a roof, and be done with it.

I might just do that this weekend.  I've been wanting to move my lab up to my spare room.  It's my living room at the moment, heh.

If you have a saw, carpenters square, tape measure & screw gun (along with drill bits). You could build a mini clean room that could be taken down, without hardly leaving a trace, except a few screw holes. All it takes is some ingenuity how to put it together.

You can screw 2x2’s or 2x4’s flat to the wall, ceiling & floor to create a box frame Then screw 2X2β€˜s or 2X4’s against those floor to ceiling. Then use 2x2’s to frame in a rigid door frame. That would get you the box, walls & entry/exit.

If you wanted it more rigid & solid. Screw chipboard to the uprights. Chip board is only $7 a sheet. On the floor you could lay down formica, plastic carpet runner, or linoleum & just use a few screws to hold it in firmly place. Then cover the whole interior with thick mill plastic, clear or black plastic.

All you need in there is a table, chair & good bright light. A shelf or 2 at arms reach from a sitting position in the chair is also handy. One of those inexpensive 3 or 4 drawer sterilite cabinet files, on casters under the table for tools, etc.

You might ponder building a incubation / grow chamber along side it with a common wall the same way. The world is your playground. Just depends on your budget, ingenuity & carpenter skills. Not counting the lights, table, chair & shelving. I would wager you could build a very effective functional combo for about a $100 bill.

If you also go with a go incubation space / grow chamber. Moisture is going to be an issue. You want to overlap the plastic about a foot or 2 each way & use something like double sided carpet tape to insure the overlap joints are tightly sealed. As high RH leaking out, can mildew walls, floor & ceiling behind the plastic.

Use a tape measure, figure the dimensions of the room & space where you want to install whatever you build. Take notes, draw a plan, think about it awhile to insure its what you want, the way you want it. Then, go for it. Dedicated mini clean room & incubation / grow space is nice.

It's comfortable to do G2G, cloning, spawning bulk, making prints, ect in a mini clean room. Reality is I do a lot in there without the flowhood even running. Hey, it's like setting in a still air jumbo glove box. A pair of freshly laundered tyvek coveralls, hair net, mask & gloves, spray Oust & you are good to go.

Just keep the inside Spartan. Don't clutter it up. Clutter harbors places for contaminants to hide. Of course, keep it a secret. Tell anyone & its not a secret anymore.
