Im having a problem when I shake my grains.

Hello my friends. I have noticed that when I shake my jars often when the mycelium grows back it is all to one side. This is because I only shake my jars to certain point because because i am scared that, by overhsaking, I might damage or weaken the mycelium leaving it susceptible to a bacteria contamination or a stallout or both. How hard can i shake the jars to make sure that the grain a spreadout uniformly in order to ensure and even recover throughout the jar. A response would be much appreciated.
I have also made a casing layer for a bulk substrate using spaghnum peat moss, vermiculite and 10% gypsum. I also took a teaspoon of granular penningtons lime (not hydrated) and put it into a blender with the water that I was using to hydrate the casing mix. Do you think this kind of lime/water when added to the dry casing mix will positively affect the pH.
Thanks, UkShroomer

When you shake your jars, you want to separate every kernel of grain from every other one. Bang it on a fully inflated tire, or phone book, etc. If it fails to recover, then it was contaminated with bacteria anyway. Only shake once at around 20% to 30%.
Be careful using any lime but hydrated lime for a casing layer. If it comes from dolomite limestone, it can negatively impact fruiting performance due to high Mg. You can use calcium carbonate(ground limestone or oyster shells), but it's only so effective because it needs a month or two to break down, and most casing layers are finished by then. RR

it isn't just about how hard u shake it. getting it evenly distributed requires a little finesse. Try to get the grain rolling around in multiple directions if that makes any sense.

Thanks for the response guys. Next time I shake I will make sure all the grains are split apart from one another. I will also try rolling the jars around to get the grain distributed evenly. Im gonna pick up some hydrated lime tommorow.
Thanks UKShroomer

What do you think about shaking P. azurescens in grain? I think the growth bursts every time I shake them.

Shake once at about 20% to 30%. RR
