Psilocybe coprophila and/or Psilocybe merdaria
    #10652763 - 07/10/09 12:25 PM (14 years, 9 months ago)

I found a couple of mushrooms today in a cow pattie. I believe it's Psilocybe coprophila. What do you think?

It does look similar. I'd compare to images at the above site.

Found my first Panaeolus subbalteatus for 2010 in the dung piles last week. An early start for this season here in Sweden.

Today I found a new species in the piles. Something more interesting than all the coprinus, conocybe and panaeolus I have found in 2008 and 2009. I mostly guess that it is Psilocybe coprophila, but they look a bit different than the mushrooms in my first post (found in cow dung). This is on horse dung.

Does anyone have good photos of Psilocybe merdaria? Seems to be rare and google image search shows several different species... Could this be it?

Together with these ones in the same pile I found both Panaeolus papilionaceus and Panaeolus subbalteatus.

and this is the habitat  lots and lots of dung!

Those look like a good match for Psilocybe merdaria.

It should maybe be known as Deconica merdaria.

It has a differnt habit than P. coprophila, and appears to be a bit more likeky to grow in clusters.

Go ahead and start a new thread to show off your recent finds, if you want to. This one is old and the title doesn't convey the content of your new post.

Oh, and it is Deconica coprophila now... *EDIT* I guess it has not been officially moved to Deconica yet. It is still P. coprophila.

Thanks.

What is the exakt features that differs coprophila from merdaria?

I don't like how they split up Psilocybe/Deconica...

One easy way to tell is that P. coprophila should be transluscent-striate from the margin half way to the center, while P. merdaria is not transluscent-striate.

There are some other differences - P. merdaria gets larger and has smaller spores.

Compare the Flora Agaricina Neerlandica entries for P. merdaria and P. coprophila.

Ok, is that the cap that is supposed to be translucent from below? Maybe it shows better in this photo?

I couldn't access the entries from Agaricina Neerlandica...

P. merdaria should have a membranous annulus that deteriorates into an annular zone on the stem half way down or lower.

Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World says it isn't known to be active, and that further study is needed. Mushrooms of Northeastern North America lists it as active.

Bobzimmer: None of my photos shows any annulus so that rules out merdaria then?

OnlineTwiztidsage: Hmm, I see.

No. The annulus disappears sooner or later. Can you see the annular zone? Is it below mid way on the stem?

ha thats what i was thinking too bob. i dont see any remnants on those stems at all. but i bet they are d merdaria anyways.

"margin translucent striate when moist, and often appendiculate with remnats of a partial veil."

there is one photo that shows that very well.

Sorry, but I can see no translucent striates from above and no annulus or visible annular zone.

I got a few other photos taken from above and one with veil.
I have googled for photos that shows P. coprophila with veil but didn't find any. Not even on very small mushrooms.

I will take more photos the next time I'm visiting the piles.

Back with more pics. Rainy and very wet today. A few of the mushrooms show the translucent striate. Maybe 10%...

Still no signs of an annular zone.
