*** Yeast question***
    #1252996 - 01/27/03 11:55 AM (13 years, 10 months ago)

-Is there a difference between nutritional yeast and brewers yeast? If yes, what's the main difference?
-Which kind of yeast is/or can be bad for fungi?
-Some wine yeast contain 'emulsifier', what is it for? is it bad for fungi?
-Which kind of yeast work best in agar?

Thanks a lot!

I can't see how yeast could be beneficial to fungi on agar. The yeast would just be in competition with the mycelium for the sugar/food source. What is the purpose of the experiment you are attempting?

The yeast dies during sterilization.

I always add it to my agar mixtures, stamets suggests it in both PDYA, and MEA.

if you use nutritional yeast (already dead), yes.
I had a shitload of contams from MYA, using live yeast, until I realised that some of the yeast was surviving the sterilisation....d'oh!
this was with my non-pc'd peroxidated MYA.
yeasts can produce spores that survive boiling, dunno about pc'ing, but anyway, now I use yeast extract rather than live yeast, with no probs.

I always did the potato dextrose agar whitout yeast but some peoples told me that by adding 1 or 2 gram of yeast i will improve my chance of getting rhyzomorphic growth.

I've found two kind of yeast:
-- Wine yeast a.k.a 'Saccharomyces bayanus its an active dry yeast selected for vinification.
and
-- Pure brewers'yeast from Coopers brewery
** They came in a powder form (5 gram each) **

I want to know if someone have experience with those kind of yeast before i try it.

Any suggestion?

Thanks!

nitrogen is just a nutrient that the yeast offers the media.

Cow Shit Collector asked why yeast helps, it's because it adds nitrogen.
