PF Classic - When to pick 'em and dosage with no scale..

I can't figure out when the best time to pick is. I try to compare the size to other pictures of the PF Classic but I doubt that's very accurate. My cakes have a bunch of small (under 1 inch) mushrooms on them, and the largest one of those has just slightly broke the veil where I see gills.

So.. should I pick them all when that happens to one, or pick that one, or is this not even the right time? Can you still eat it after the veil breaks? How do you know how much to eat if you don't have any scales?

I only ask because they all seem awful small to be picked, but I'm not very knowledgeable so perhaps this is a common occurence with the PF Classic strain.

I'm using the PF-Tek and done exactly by that site's guidelines.

Any help or clarifications are greatly appreciated.

just pick that one for now.

improvise a scale by balancing a ruler on a pencil, and glueing two plastic pots on, one onto each end.
put things of known weight into one tub (look in a supermarket for a roll of sweets or two), and wet mushrooms in t'other

Even if they are awfully small, if the veil has broken it's probably a good time to harvest.

Also.. I plan on eating these tonight, but I won't be able to put together that homemade-scale. Any ideas on dosage with fresh picked and no scales?

one person would probably have a good night with 30g fresh. see if you can pick a picture of your strain from the hindreds available on the net that look most like your crop for size, shape and substrate. post it here and you may get a more accurate guess.

my guess - if they're 2 inches tall and have a 1 inch cap, they're about 1-2g fresh each, so 15-30 fruits. if they're bigger, reduce numbers, if smaller increase. if this is your first time, make sure you're not alone and go for the low end.

If you do make a cheap ruler scale...or home made one.

a nickel is 5 grams.
a dime is 2.3 grams.
a penny's vary from 2.3 to 3.1 grams. < so they are worthless
