What is this? Weird looking orange dots on bulk sub... - UPDATE - w/pics - 05/10/10
    #12523070 - 05/07/10 04:15 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

there's this little patch in my tub about the size of a toonie... sorry, the size of... a really big quarter?

anyway, these dots don't look like any pins i've ever seen, and it's the only patch in the entire tub that looks like this.

could this be the start of some sort of contam?

please view the full size image to see what i'm talking about:

now, i did find a bit of green in this tub... i cut it out before fruiting it. now before you all start yelling at me, i would never have done this under normal circumstances, but my last three tubs have gone green, and this was the last one incubating, so i figured i'd try fruiting it and see what happens, since my apartment is probably already swarming with contaminate spores.

otherwise, this tub looks really healthy and is pinning nicely. but i'm very concerned about more contams. please, any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

i wanna see where this thread goes, since they both were orange. i never found out what mine was, but it spread faster then wild fire. watch that very carefully.

it doesn't appear to be powdery... the picture i posted is really magnified.. i just looked at the tub again, and the patch is smaller than i said, more like the size of a nickle, or a bit bigger.

it almost looks like the yellowing that happens when your sub is too dry, but i've never seen anything this dark, or this orange. and they are definitely DOTS, like the start of something growing... i was hoping they were just weird looking pins, but i doubt it. :frown:

Looks like pins with some dried metabolites nearby.  Just keep an eye on it if it starts to spread or do something crazy you can toss it but I don't see any reason to now.

thanks guys...

i noticed it two days ago. it was just a bit yellow, but red flags went up. the patch hasn't grown since then, just gotten darker/more orange, and the "dots" have become more defined.

if it starts spreading i will definitely toss it.

poop. :frown:

anyone else have other thoughts???

What temperature are you fruiting them at?  Probably just stress metabolites.

It's probably just metabolites. Which can be orange.

I wouldn't stress over those spots,  it looks like there was a few water drops there and now it is drying out and causing metabolites.  I would be more concerned about the green coming back before that spot ruins your tub.

oh i AM concerned about the green coming back... good to hear that i (possibly) don't have yet another thing to worry about!

i've been fruiting at room temp, which lately has been fluctuating a lot. the temp outside has been anywhere from 5 degrees Celsius at night, to 20 during the day.

could the myc be stressed because it's too cold? or from the temp changes?

The definition of those orange looking areas look to me like pins that haven't broken the surface.  If you look closely, there looks to be small mycelial networks surrounding each "pin".  And, the one that's pretty much top dead center in the red outline seems to be forming a fruitbody shape.

Anyone else see it?  Remember, you can zoom twice by clicking on the lower right of the pic after zooming once.

The spots are all over your substrate. Just not as big. Probably nothing but metabolites

I saw something similar with a cake I tossed in the garden due to contamns! Wasnt till after it was in the garden though, I moved some of the soil covering it the next day there were orange dots growing everywhere! They were not pins though!

Looks like metabolites to me as well. Pretty common thing for a bulk substrate.
