Hidin shit in your house: my two cents
    #12518444 - 05/06/10 06:32 PM (14 years, 16 days ago)

#1 rule: Have nothing in plain sight from the outside of your house. This is asking the cops to get a warrant.

Bad places to hide things: The cops emptied out pill bottles, mattresses, dresses drawers, opened any luggage/bags...basically, any typical hiding spots

However, unless they are searching you for something really important, they are kind of lazy

Any old, broken electronics that you can disassemble are awesome. They are not going to, for example, open up the grilles of your head phones, where you have dime bags stashed (hypothetical).

You might even want to hide things outside if you have a backyard or lawn.

I mean, this post might seem kind of obvious, but the reason I am making it is that it never occurred to me how easily I could have protected myself from "worst case scenario" by taking a few extra preventive measures. Get creative, so you at least have some sort of back up plan to fall back on. Peace & Love

A computer case would work well too.  Easy to open, and it's pretty unlikely they won't open it up to look in it.  At least they didn't when I was raided.  Unfortunately, all my shit was elsewhere.

Depending on the Cops, they may try to take your computer though - so that would suck!

That would definitely be a bummer.

Take off the switchplate covers or receptacle covers and you will often find space to stash something. Be careful not to touch any wires...

I've read the story of a gold bug who got burglarized thoroughly and the thieves left with some useless crap.

In his shed he had an old can of paint holding 50 Gold American Eagles (worth $60,000) in a baggie under the hardened paint.

You tell me, who will go into a guys crappy toolshed to steal a can of hardened old paint?

I have more gold than that hidden in safe deposit boxes. And they are hidden in a bank vault hidden in the bank. I don't care if the thieves know where it is, i'll even tell them. They have to get past all the alarms, armed guards, bust into the vault, then bust into the boxes and figure out which ones to hit. I don't think they can do it. That's the way to "hide" stuff.

more like something his grandkids would take to shoot with pellet guns and leave near a river somewhere

my 2 cents: if i was to have any kind of decent stash of anything, it would be put in a safe underneath discreet floorboards. worth the hassle of taking it out each time for the peace of mind it would never be found in a search

That much gold will weigh about 5 lb and someone picking up the can would notice the weight and wonder. Someone might toss it out by mistake. Why do goofy stuff like that when safe deposit boxes are relatively cheap and offer top notch protection? Safes can be stolen too. If they find it they pry it up and take it with them.

Actually Paint is pretty heavy stuff.
Those half gallon cans probably weigh almost ten pounds when full. who is really gonna check a can of paint? Assuming they get something to pry the lid off. (Which is a total bitch after you open it and the paint hardens and seals the lid,) then continue to stick their hand in to check for something other than paint.

I would assume if somebody went this far of checking things they probably aren't your run of the mill burglar looking for you stashed belongings with value. They must be looking for something in particular of special significance that they have somehow acquired knowledge that you have stashed on your property.

Or maybe even your vacuum.

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for that my dear friend is the beginning of the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it. ~ Adrian Rogers

An old trick people use is to hide valuables in the garbage. They do that in motel rooms and the maid throws their stuff out. A full can of paint might weigh 10 lb but we were talking about a can with some hardened paint in the bottom. It might work, it's better than putting it out in the open or in a box labeled "gold". For 25 to $35 a year you can get a small sd box that will hold all the gold you are likely to have. You can also put in important papers and whatnot. You get the best protection money can buy. Or put it someplace goofy and hope.
