Say you took a group of infants, and raised them in a controlled environment where they were never, ever exposed to a letter in the alphabet... let's just say Z. Would they ever naturally make the Zzz sound? What would happen when they grew up and entered the real world and discovered there's another letter to the alphabet? could they even fathom it?
What if there are more letters to our alphabet that we're not aware of? wouldn't it blow your mind?

This was already tried by a group of Italian scientists. Not only could the group not recognize the sound but they were unable to snore.
It was published in the New England Journal of Medicine. I'll try to look around for a link.

Silly rabbit. There ARE more letters to the alphabet. 38 more letters to be exact. And if you heard a word which had just a few of those letters it would make yer brain jump around like a psychotic lemur and spray yer precious bodily fluids everywhere.
So, y'know, sometimes ignorance IS bliss.

They would make a zzz sound. If they weren't exposed to any of the alphabet, would that mean they wouldn't be able to make any sound?

There are plenty of sounds our mouths can make that other languages use but English does not. Since we never had any regular exposure to these sounds we do not or cannot produce them without practice (the clicking sounds of certain native African languages come to mind). There are some sounds that are easily produced and recognized by infants, and most languages tend to use these. There are other sounds that are recognized early but then without reinforcement are lost. Lastly, there are sounds that cannot be learned without practice and repeated exposure. I'm not sure where "z" falls, but I would guess it wouldn't appear without practice.

yeah come on guys......
I can make all sorts of noises that can't really be spelled
I can even link them together into large words and "sentences" that can't be spelled.
Actually, many of these sounds can take on meaning if I'm tripping with some friends

I'm reminded of some of Eminem's lyrics - every now and then he doesn't really have anything that goes with what he's sayin' so he just makes it up in weird ass phrases - sounds kinda cool too... Ikmishnikhuuk femanithloosh thlemnifluuhk!

true, there are foreign sounds in languages foreign to us, but that's easily accepted.
eh... I first thought of this question a long time ago... third or fourth grade, I believe, when we were first learning about the scientific method, and the teacher was teaching about experiments.
I have honestly never asked it out loud until just then.
weird, eh?

there is no chinese alphabet. the written characters used represent meanings, the pronounciation depends upon ones dialect. the character for 'mountain' is pronounced 'shan' in beijing and 'son' in guangzhou and 'yama' in japan the ability to read chinese characters gives one the tools to understand the meaning but very little info (usually none) as to how to pronounce the word. unlike english where we can look at a written word and usually pronounce it, but may have no idea as to its meaning.

with regards to foreign sounds. i guess its well known the problems japanese have with 'l' and 'r' - q - what do japanese men do when they have erections? a - vote!
they also have probs with f/h, b/v, t/th and s/sh. english speakers have similar probs with japanese sounds, they have one halfway between 'f' and 'h' which is tough to get your tongue around the reason is simply physical, in speaking japanese the tongue and lips don't assume the positions required to make a clear 'rrrr' or 'llll' sounds that we use in english. for a japanese to make these sounds properly it is a matter of physical training, one must teach the organs of speech to 'assume the position'.
