Mushrooms grow up the sides!
    #1251624 - 01/27/03 12:10 AM (13 years, 10 months ago)

Hi guys,

I bought a kit from the market and I've put it in a fish tank with a heater. Last time I grew one the mushies all grew up the sides of the kit and I ended up snapping the plastic when trying to take the cake out. I have a feeling it's going to happen again. I've set the heater to 28 but there's no condensation in the tank. Water keeps evaporating so I fill up a kettle boil it and pour some in. The fish tank has a plastic grill on top so there is a lot of air exchange. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? How can I encourage growth on the top of the kit? If I let the ones round the side grow, can I just wait until the next flush which did start to grow on the top afterwards last time?
Thanks,

UH

Yes, the sides of the container are not opaque.

Try dunking the kit for 24hrs, I did this with my kit and now I have shrooms growing in the middle. Then you can squeedgee that third eye, real fuckin' clean (to quote Hicks!)

Dunking it? Just putting the whole thing in water? Someone told me the reason it happens is because the cake needs softening and that the way around it is by spraying it lightly with water. Can anyone verify this? Are there any other methods?

Check this thread

then flip it out the tray and do it like a cake. Also you say the top of the container is open mesh?Well thats why no condensation on the glass, you need something like seran wrap or cling film over the top to hold in moisture and to manuly air change by fanning or add an aquarium bubbler.

Good luck.

Maybe if you cover the sides with an opaque material (like black construction paper taped to the outside). and place a light source at the top. Just make sure that you use no more than a 40watt bulb, for no more that 18 hours a day. That should at least make 'em grow up and not out.
