Question about possibly fraudulent cashier's check
    #12513935 - 05/05/10 10:25 PM (14 years, 17 days ago)

So here's the deal, I talked to someone on craigslist a few weeks ago to do a deal.. he wanted like 20 laptops upgraded and I gave him my price. He agreed and said he would have his secretary send out a check and have all the laptops shipped. We exchanged contact info and he said he would be sending it out ASAP.

Today I get a cashier's check in the mail, regular envelope USPS style, overnight shipping ($25 shipping), with nothing in it but a cashier's check in my name for $2,400 ($400 more than we agreed to...)

Now of course, this makes me extremely suspicious and make me think it's somehow a scam, but I can't figure out how. Why would someone do this?

I am concerned because something eerily similar to this happened to me before...
Years ago, I tried to sell my car on CL. I found what I thought was a good buyer and he said he would be sending me a cashier's check. Except he wanted me to ship it to him, and he would pay for the extra cost of shipping in the check. I told him I was waiting until it cleared before I signed the title over. I went and deposited in the bank, and waited for the money to appear. But instead of that, I got a notice from my bank saying my account had been terminated for trying to deposit a fraudulent check. I was like WTF!!

First of all, how the fuck am *I* supposed to know if a check is fraudulent or not... obviously I thought it was real or else I wouldn't have tried to deposit it in the first place. THEY are the bank... they are the ones that should know.

Anyway, this guy never contacted me back, just sent out this check.. and never sent the laptops... which makes me very suspicious. (Although I did receive a FEDEX notice on the door today from a missed package, so that could have been it, but I am expecting several packages so I'm not sure). I've contacted the guy and have gotten no response.

Looking at the cashier's check.. it appears to be legit. There is the security features on it, watermarks and such.. and the bank it is written from appears to be a legit bank.

I was thinking of going to the bank tomorrow, and asking them if they can verify it is a legit cashier's check, before I attempt to do anything with it. Would that be a good or bad idea? I don't want to try and deposit a fake check again and have the bank fuck my account. That was not cool.

I know CL is infamous for dealing with shady fuckers which is why I am concerned.
What would you guys suggest?

I realize it's probably a scam.. which is why I was going to have the bank check it first...

But I'm still wondering...HOW is it a scam? What does this guy stand to gain by sending me a fake check?

Cops can sell you drugs to involve you in a crime and arrest you, perhaps the feds have you under a microscope. Your story is lacking a lot of detail as to who contacted who, under what context, and he said he has a secretary - what company is he with?

This sounds like the beginning of the movie Eagle Eye @_@

Look it up.  This is a well known scam.

There are no laptops.  You get a bunk check and cash it, the guy asks for his $400 back claiming it was a mistake, etc..  Then two weeks later your bank figures out it's bunk and charges all the money back to your account and sends the police to investigate you for check fraud.

There's tons of variations, but that's the basic way the scam works.  CL is well, well known for this scam.

There is a lot of cashier check fraud going on and I was actually told by my bank the other day that there is like a week and a half hold on them before they even go through. Definitely a scam. On a side note-ish. My "identity" was stolen a couple years ago and it was kind of clever how he did it. basically somehow dude got my bankaccount number and made checks with my number and a fake name and wrote them out to a bunch of girls telling them they'd be models and to go cash the checks and send the money various places ("camera men" "make up" etc) well they'd go to the bank thinking their going to be hot shit models and bam, denied. frauuuud. so for like a week i was getting calls from all over the country telling me about the fake checks that were coming in in my name. I would not give $5 for that check. I had a girl apply to work for me who said she just got a check like that from someone out of state paying her for 2 weeks work in advance and she was supposed to send him $1500 back out of it when it cleared. I talked her out of it. It always seems to clear but then a few days or week later it comes back. Then the bank wants the money back. It's an age old scam. The bank can't tell by looking at it, only by checking with the issuer. Even then, sometimes it's good when presented and then no longer good later on. They may have made a laser copy of a good check and waited to cash the good one. Most likely its just a total scam.

From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.” (attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville political philosopher Circa 1835)
