Shiitake to brighten your day

Just noticed that a maple tree stump that was inoculated about 2 years ago is coming through with a few pins. Not worried about the quantity or quality, but just nice to see it worked out in the end.

Here's a zoom-out of the photo above.

Logs like these have been yielding for 2 years already. Nice to see them still working at it.

I think I missed something as well. Unless he is joking about how cracked they are from dry air passing over them - the bottom one on log looks like it has petals? Although, I believe it is a trait of this particular sub-culture.

I would think that finding someone who already has chopped cords of hardwood ready for you to inoculate would be so much better than innoculating random stumps in the woods.

Yeah, I got a guy I'm going to be getting precut logs from, but I like the idea of inoculating random things, and hoping they fruit sometime down the line.

Fruiting these logs is by no accident. All they require is some colonization, a cool, semi-humid environment, time and patience. These logs would have produced a lot better had I soaked them at the beginning of the season. Sounds like something I will do this weekend! Great idea. I ate those mushrooms raw after running some water over em to moisten em up. Delicious!
I had thought of opening a business growing and selling gourmet mushrooms, but to be honest it's heavy time consuming labour. I'd need to give up my current job and hire a bunch of cheap labour to keep such an operation running. (Ever looked online for a mushroom picking job? Min wage! ) My other problem is I have no one to sell to steadily. I've been to massive mushroom farms that deal with shiitake, king oyster, enokki, various other oysters, etc. They have an expensive operation for a product that has VERY little shelf life after being picked. I've even been to a mushroom distribution facility where they work wholesale. Sure I can score an excellent deal on whatever variety I'd want, but to take that product and sell it to restaurants just doesn't sound like I'll be pulling in a ton of cash.
When these shiitake logs are done with, I'll probably pickup another 20-50 of them. It sucks that they do not fruit continuously, but when you don't put your mind on it and you suddenly see fruits, these small surprises are pretty awesome.

Where's your source for that one? I think the only negative drawback is the amount of time/quantity of fruits you can extract from a log/season is vs having them in bags. Bags produce heavier, and can produce in any season, indoors. Woops I misread what you wrote... Yes this stump did not take for a while as I believe it was still partially alive...
Here's the logs from 2 years ago when they were first drilled and plugged:

Here's what a shiitake log farm looks like:

obviously logs are THE standard. i said actual stumps. like ones that are still atached to the ground. i read oysters are easy on stumps but shiitake maybe just took much longer to colonize. i will try to find where i read that for you.

Nice looking fruits. The flower shiitake brings the highest price at market. It's from cycling humidity and temperature.
By the way, shiitake needs to be cooked to release the food value within. Eating it raw doesn't give you the nutrition. RR

I was not aware of this fact. Can you please elaborate on 'cooked'. BBQ'd, stir fried, same difference as long as temperature causes some sort of reaction?

I've gotta ask out of curiousity.. What is highest price /LB at market of shiitake? I am aware location plays a role, but any generalization sounds good.

I had a flush of all Donko grade shiitakes 3 weeks ago The weather was to say the least...super dry RH was 29 or so in the day...with some wind at night if i was lucky RH jumped to 40 (ish)
of course I did a 24 hour soak to get them started
the trick is to water them with a hose as much as possible....and give them one OR TWO nightS of high RH (80 ISH)at least after they have shown the cracks ...that makes them bigger
with all that going on....it takes a good 8 days or more for them to fully grow for harvest
just my observations

Bump. Merely because today marks the day I dunked the logs for 12 hours. Let's see what pins up next.

I have never used a hygrometer where the logs are leaning so I cannot really give you a straight forward answer. Where they are is under a tree in the shade where cool breezes make their way through.
Culture was obtained from the farm you can see in the photo. Not mail order or anything like that. It was part of a live workshop. Neat stuff!

As you can see, the dunking was a success. I may not be keeping the logs at optimum fruiting conditions, but they're doing better than they were pre-dunk. Enjoy!
