U.S. to disclose stockpiles of nuclear weapons MSNBC News | May 3rd, 2010
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Monday the Obama administration will disclose the number of weapons in its nuclear arsenal, a closely guarded secret for more than a half-century.
Clinton told a U.N. conference that the move is aimed at improving transparency in the nuclear disarmament regime and encouraging other nations to comply with it.
"Beginning today, the United States will make public the number of nuclear weapons in our stockpile and the number of weapons we have dismantled since 1991," she said. "So for those who doubt that the United States will do its part on disarmament, this is our record, these are our commitments and they send a clear unmistakable signal."
My 2 cents: This is why I remain indifferent, and even somewhat supportive of Obama, because of stuff like this. For all the bad stuff people accuse the administration of, I see lots of good stuff too. Go Obama Go!

This whole disarmment thing is a bit ridiculous.
Even if we were to disarm all the nukes in the world, the only thing that would accomplish is making it so only rogue states have nukes.
It's just like gun control or drug prohibition. We give all the power to the people who choose not to follow our rules AKA criminals.

Well all things considered, a single nuclear detonation by a rogue nation would still be infinitely preferable to thermonuclear annihilation.
What's good about it is that it's more government transparency! Hooray!

Assuming of course that they actually release a real number. If we have 80,000 and they tell the world we have 2,000 then we haven't really gotten anywhere

Who is "we" and what difference does it make whether you know anything about our stockpile or not?

I'm sure the actual count is known to a number of intelligence agencies.

"we" is the United States, and it doesn't make a difference, that's what I'm trying to say. They can say whatever number they want and it won't matter one tiny bit

I doubt it. The CIA had no idea what the Soviets had and I don't think any other agencies are any better.

in the US it's called treason when you give up national secrets, I guess transparency is what obama calls it, I'm still waiting for the transparency the american people were promised about the workings of government

hahahaha... perestroika was not the end of the cold war, any clue what Glasnost was claimed to be, openness and transparency in government for Russia, I wonder how that's working out for them...
maybe you should have paid attention in civics class, the cold war is still going strong, I was there when 'diplomacy' was breaking down

For some reason there are a whole lot of children out there who don't believe there are enemies willing to fuck us. Cold war just means a conflict that hasn't gone hot. There is plenty of cold war to last to eternity. It aint just the Soviets/Russians or the malignant dwarf Putin.
