I found the orchard today and it was barren of morels. I did, however, find a few pounds of beautiful yellows in a woods nearby!!!!! ill post pics later.
In response to the contaminants thing... yeah, i think arsenic produced from the breakdown of fertilizers and pesticides is the major concern. there is an article about it in one of last years issues of fungi magazine ( i keep meaning to mention that everyone on here should subscribe to that magazine. Its really good and well worth supporting.)
I think the orchards were actually in Northern NJ, bordering NY. The guy was consuming them for years and died of arsenic poisoning, the suspected cause was the one mentioned before...to be honest i was kind of happy when i didn't find any in the orchard.
GK, its awesome that the orchards in Germany are organic...what they've done over here is terrible. The population of bald eagles (Which is practically Americas symbol) was devastated due to pesticides used many years ago...pesticides got into the food chain (bugs->mice->eagles) and caused the egg shells of the Eagles to develop very thin. When eagles would nest them, the shells would break...I think its very likely that the shit they were covering our food with is still contaminating the ground.

It's not a general thing. There are still larger orchards that use pesticides. It's just that - knowing both worlds - I get the feeling that the people in "Old Europe" are generally much more environmentally aware than in the US. That's not only true for Germany, but for all of Europe, but especially the north. France and Southern Europe not so much, but Germany and Scandinavia very much so. We have trash cans for glass, packaging, paper and cardboard, organic waste and regular trash, for example. Every house does.

That's what I needed. There is an article this year and last year. The guy's name was Peabody. Here's the links.
