 Electric heating pad, do they work?

This isnt for me, its for a friend growing for the first time. Do heating pads/electric blankets work any good? Ive never had to resort to them, but it looks like my friend might have to.
PS: I know everything about the aquarium-heater-in-a-jar-of-water-tek, but dont want to put her through that since she has a heat pad readily available.
PPS: This is for the incubator THEN fruiting chamber

Yea - Heating pads work fine...just make sure you watch the temperature closely in the beginning and be sure that it doesn't get too hot (stay away from temps between 100-106). If possible, try to get a heating pad that has multiple settings...I bought one at WalMart that was 9.95 and it had three different heat settings...the second heat setting in a closed space was exactly 85 degrees. did you put the pad on the top or bottom of the incubator? And for the fruiting stage, it only needs to be 78degrees tops, could i just put a towel in between to lower anything that gets to hot for the fruiting chamber?

They'll work, but they're a bad idea, and here's why:
1) Its hard to maintain the temp
2) They have a tendency to dry out substrate
3) They are a fire hazard
Just tell your friend to get one of these.

Thanks but nothanks for the aquarium-heater-in-a-jar-Tek...Guess I might resort to the Aqua heater-in-a-jar-of-water Tek.....I just want it to be as easiest as possible for her so that she doesnt get disencouraged..Im trying to live up to the argument that its easy to grow....AQ heaters require alot of tinkering.....*sigh* ...but so does the blanket....oh well...Ill pick one

2 Rubbermaids and a submersible aquarium heater is pretty simple.
they are easy to dial into the right temp.
and you don't have to worry about burning your house down!

I experienced no fire what so ever and I left mine on medium (87 degrees) through the whole colinizatiion process in my shoe box (cardboard) ghetto style incubator. I put it on the bottom and checked the temps 2 to 3 times daily and they were always the same. As for drying out the substrate goes, I have two jars of Creepers still in the jars (i plan on trying hippie3's neglect tek) and the insides of the glass are still wet with condensation which i hope is a good thing. I'll never go back to incubating with a water heater, heating pads rule. As for fruiting i dont know I havent tried yet.

I am currently inccubating using a heating pad used for a 10 gallon aquarium under a small stryfoam cooler, and the temp seems to saty pretty stable, its good if you have a smaller amount of jars to incubate. I'm also going to use this for maintaining temp while fruiting. I havnt had any problems with it getting too hot that it might cause a fire. Also, Since it is in the cooler I havnt noticed any drying of substrate. But this is just my expierience could be different with others

Yes, I have 4 of those rubbermaids for my setup, plus a huge closet with about 6 seperate fruiting chambers, Im setup fine!!..I just dont want her to spend cash when she could always try some other methods kicking around, she already has a heat pad......this isnt a real serious try at it, just an intro for her.....Ill look around for the heatpad teks in the search board...

I don't know what this ^^^^^^ guy was saying, but if you don't want to use an aquarium heater (which in my opinion is simple, cheap (whole set up:cooler, fish tank heater, and jar can be purchased for under 20 bucks) and effective) I'd say put them in a box on top of the hot water heater.
I'm really against the heating pad idea for the fact that it could potentially burn her house down, you'd be kicking yourself in the ass for not spending the 20 bucks then, wouldn't you?

yes very effective and for simple minds like us or just heat water everytime maybe 6 time a day and use a wide range temperature interval just a little bit late you do what you want .and you feel safe.stop the posts.

I hate to admit this but my heating pad incubater is still working after a couple of years.The only problem was when i used a cheap extension cord.It would always feel very warm,i would say hot but for me not to change a hot extension cord would be stupid right? Anyway the extension melted in the carpet,no fire.I now keep it pluged in the wall,next to the fish tank heater in two rubbermaids.Oh ya its also next to the smoke detectors and fire extinguisher.

I have a heating pad, its all i ever used, (lack of funds). I do plan on doing the 2-rubbermaid thing in about a month or so,
however comma..
I have a heating pad with 3 different settings, i keep it on low and not under pressure, I put it ontop of my jars and not under, and it keeps at a perfect 84 degrees,
Im not arguing that they arent a fire hazard (definatley MORE likely to be one), just check it often and make sure that its not old, or its not about to short out, or whatever,
how would a heating pad spontaniously combust anyway? my mom sleeps on them all night and so have i, that doesnt mean i will catch on fire does it?
and no...
i dont sleep with my mom.

an accident waiting to happen (again).
get rid of that thing. those detectors, even a sprayer wouldn't keep your house from going up if you're not around. think of the consequences.
sorry to bring a downer to this thread, but ...at the very least, sit it on some tiles or something.
