germinating khat
    #3862373 - 03/03/05 12:43 PM (19 years, 29 days ago)

I know this is comething that has been covered but I just did a search and there doesn't appear to be anything recent (or something on the search screwed up... only 11 subjects appeared?!)

Anyway, its a fairly simple question so I thought I'd ask.

I just bought 5 Khat seeds and was wanting to make sure I got a good germination rate.
I remember reading on here that people put them on a piece of damp kitchen roll or something like that but I forgot the exact procedure.

Could someone go over the early stages for me so I dont mess everything up!

Many thanks

It's really complicated. You put them on soil, cover about 1/8" deep, keep moist until they come up and there you are.

Uh thanks. I know its not that simple. Ie. you dont just use 'soil' for starters and you have to be careful on the amount of moisture you give it as it's sensitive to it... I've gathered that from this other website however, can anyone reveal more about this moist kitchen roll method that i remember?

I think (but only about 50% sure which is why I'm asking) that it said boil some water and put it on a kitchen towel then put the seeds on the moist bit and they should start to do something... like germinate... and then you plant them.

If its just a case of putting in 'soil' can someone recommend a soil mix as I am by no means a proficient gardener.

Oh well, if you already know how to do it better than those who try to help you, why even ask. All my source ever did was grow the damn stuff so what does he know? Come back with a better attitude and you might get somewhere.

Hey!
I found your post whilst looking for germinating info aswell!  I took the plunge and just finished planting some seeds. Fingers crossed.  I am a complete novice, but here's what I did.

shallow plastic tray (mayb 4cm)
bottom 1cm with fish tank gravel (for drainage)
filled res with cactus soil mix
used a pencil to make little holes for the seeds (maybe 5mm down)
put seeds in and filled the little holes
misted with water.

I'm going to put it southfacing, and try keep it warm as possible (I'm in Scotland so wish me luck!!)

If I'm succesful I'll update with a pic of the initial set up etc.

I wasn't intending posting but felt provoked by the rudeness of the other person that responded ...it's evident from the thread who has the bad attitude!!

What did you try in the end and did it work?

i planted some the other week, only 3 i got them from a bloke in college, i did pretty much the same as you except i put them in an east window because i read in the early stages they like bright light but not all day direct sunlight, only a bit of morning light

they were in the ground about a week and the first one is up today :snowman:

Ahhh!  I am going to have to start over.  Did you cover them for the first week? A few days after sowing I thought it was too cold for them by the window, so put them on a low voltage heat mat...maybe this killed them though!  I thought I was helping lol.
Are yours still growing fine??

They should be fine, a heating mat should help with germination if anything.
