Language Study
    #12493242 - 05/02/10 11:29 AM (13 years, 9 months ago)

I've been studying languages since I was a little kid. I find it extremely interesting how people learn languages and use different strategies when trying to learn a new language. I've tried different methods myself and found that there's a big difference in what works well for one person and what works for another. Some people may focus on reading for example why others try to talk more for example.

I prefer to study with pen and paper since it helps to organize my thoughts and enables me to dissect sentences in detail while keeping notes at the same time for future reference.

In the past I've usually taken a pretty conventional approach when learning language. (Learning basic vocab, simple grammatical structures etc...)
But now I've been taking a different approach and more or less just dive in. Take some complex sentences from books/newspapers/internet, and start dissecting. I've found it enables me to understand a lot more a lot faster. It feels a bit like cheating almost, don't know if any of you ever feel like you're cheating while you're playing by the rules??

So. To you language enthusiasts out there. Please share your study tactics! Hope to someone can teach me something about learning language...

Hope I made myself clear. English can be challenging at times. Wish I was a native speaker sometimes.

When I learn a new language, I try to learn as much grammar as I can first.  I feel like it is a lot easier to learn structure and such before vocabulary.  If you know the structure of the language, all you have to do is plug things in.

That's very true.

In a way I am doing the same. I am taking existing sentences and take them 'apart' to learn proper structure through existing examples.

It's like building a complex machine (the grammar) on one side and obtaining lots of ingredients to be processed by that 'machine' on the other. Then if you've done it correctly you should get proper sentences. The challenge is that you need to build a machine that takes all the exceptions into account as well.
