Perlite under casing?
    #1248157 - 01/25/03 12:59 PM (21 years, 2 months ago)

I cased some Thai awhile back and did not use a bottom layer. It took a long time to fruit and I had to mist quite frequently to keep the moisture up.Its real dry here this time of year. I do not have time to be so hands on and I was wondering if a little damp perlite in the bottom would help? I have read that it does, and I have read that it does not. Has anyone ever done this? If so ,please tell me about it.Thanks.

I hear perlite is great. I'm going to use it.
The only downside is it's messy.

would verm. work as the bottom layer to help keep the moisture?

No because you pour water into the perlite and if you did this with verm it would just float at the top. Also when the water evaporates off the perlite it has a unique surface that keeps moisture in the air so it will not collect on the casing.

if you were to use perlite as the bottom layer in your terrarium, would it be advisable to still use perlite [as the bottom layer] inside the casing container that's going into the terrarium?

i read [forgot which method, i believe hongus] that you should put a bottom layer of verm. then the substrate, then a coir/verm mixture on top, then put that cased container in a perlite chamber ......

?? thanks for any help, as i'd like to refine this method to best suit the mushies

How are you going to do it? 1 inch perlite with 1/2 inch water? Are you then going to put the crumbled substrate directly on top then apply the casing?
