Thinking of joining the freemasons.
    #12481744 - 04/30/10 02:35 AM (10 years, 30 days ago)

How do I get in, and how do I know that I'm joining a lodge with proper connections? I mean I'm in for the self improvement / rule the planet aspects. I don't want to join merely a Rotary Club with a funny handshake. Also, will my agnosticism be a problem?

You cannot choose to be in the freemasons. If we want you, we will come to you.

don't quote me (and you can't cause you don't know who I am, bitch ) but if you're asking this on the shroomery, you're probably not freemason material.  for various reasons.  number one being, you're posting on the shroomery.

pause for awkward laughter

number 2 being, I don't think its really something you just go "sign up" for. I think they pretty much recruit you. which is what anon2 was basically saying.

Yes I remember seeing a documentary about them that they would just need two members to vouch for them and then that person would be in.

Don't waste your time, it's merely a Rotary Club with a funny handshake. The "power" you get is just knowing the members who are local politicians and business owners, etc.

That varries from lodge to lodge, at least here in Europe, around these parts you need 4 people to vouch for you. But yes, it really is that simple. Just find one, e.g. trough your local lodges homepage or something. They usually have some sort of recruiting program outlined there for those who don't already know any masons.

If you run your own business, those local connections can be extremely valuable, even if you end up in one of the lodges that have rules against using those connections for business purposes. Regardless, they will help you out if you're having problems (lost your job for instance).

As for the OP, in my opinion, joining the freemasons is a much better choice than a rotary club, especially if you're looking for self-development/development on a more personal level.

And posting on shroomery definitely doesn't disqualify anyone from joining a lodge.

that could come in pretty handy. i mean, were you expecting super powers?

no but seriously, you're right. my grandpa was a freemason. i didn't find out about it until a few years ago when he showed me his old ring. he said he joined up while he was in the air force, but quit because it was a waste of time. he said that the organization had become kind of a joke.

dude if your grandpa is a freemason (is there such thing as "was" as far as freemasons go? aren't you a freemason for life?) then I'm sure that'll simplify things somewhere.

I didn't mean for it to sound that way, I was making a generalization on the lifestyles of the majority of people that post on here.  I don't know much about freemasons but isn't there some expectations of high, mainstream morals and actions? Like wouldn't most shroomerite's lifestyles contradict the freemason "beliefs"

Heh, I contemplated adding a ";)" after that sentence, as I did understand what you meant.

There are certain moral aspects of the freemason deal, yes, but they are mostly related to helping out in the local community and such (macro scale, if you will). Within the lodge, no one will look down on anyone else or question the decisions of others. You'll always have the support of your "brothers" even if you fuck up in a biblical proportions sort of way.

This is the case for northern-European lodges, at least.

One of my childhood friends lived in the masonic temple.  His parents got free rent there for looking after the place.

He grew up with them and lived with them for 18 years.  He said that the only thing that they do is sit around and drink and play cards.

I am inclined to believe him on that point.
