Any suggestions on how to age dung?
    #1247870 - 01/25/03 12:50 PM (13 years, 10 months ago)

Hey all.... I recently realized that my roomate owns a horse. So I have a fairly constant supply of horse plop... but I have read that aging the poo is necissary before pasturization and spawning etc. So... how shall i go about aging it ? I live in a college town apartment, and its about 0 degrees outside... so i cant let it chill outside. any suggestions ? I actually went ahead and pasturized some of it for about an hour and spawned it with some brf cakes colonized with amazonian mycelium, and although it started off slow it seems to be doing fine now... so how necissary is aging ? any input would be helpful.. thanks a ton.

You can't really do anything to age the poo, the only reason that aged poo is recommended is because aged poo is usually devoid of the urine. As long as you don't get the poo straight from the horse's ass, you'll most likely be fine.

not for cubensis - the urine is too high in nitrates. very popular in japan as a longevity trend.

I've never used non aged poo, but I would imagine that it would smell worse than aged poo. Aged poo smells "earthy", more like dirt than poo.

i put a little horse poo in my casing its really fresh but the case colonises very fast not very fast mabe normal 3 days .high in nitrates means something it is too hard to develop bodies or it depressed the mycellium .

YES fresh poo dose stink up the place especially when u add water and pasteurize in the oven or microwave. If you don't have an understanding woman (if you have one) she will kill you.

Thanks for the input! looks like ill try the leaching, as I would like to use the poo sooner than later.

lay it out on a old window screen and it will dry in just a few days as long as it's not freezing.
I found a big old tow behind smoker laying n a junk yard.
The dude gave it to me to haul off. This wasn't the purpose i had in mind but it works good 4 it.
I put some metal mesh over top of what was left of the rack.
Then i pick up 4 bags of cheap charcoal and 1 matchlight bag
Light up 3 bags 1 being the matchlight and 2 cheap.
About half way thru the day go toss the other bag on
Then the other about 3 or 4
By 7 pm it's usually dry as a bone and ready to screen.
Smoke doesn't seem to affect it in any way. but one charcoal is burning it doesn't smoke.
Don't think i'd try it with wood though.

You could make a small version with a cheap grill any would work. Hell a gas one would really kick ass.
