Looking for a spacious tent for festies... any tips appreciated!
    #12476692 - 04/29/10 10:37 AM (14 years, 8 months ago)

Hey all, I've never purchased a tent before, but now I'm in the market to get one for the upcoming camping and festie season. I'm looking for something very spacious (my husband HATES the idea of camping, but with a roomy enough tent with a big air mattress I think he can be pacified.), fairly easy to set up and take down, and as inexpensive as possible without being low quality.

If any of you have recommendations let me know. I'm looking online right now and there are lots of options... So far I like:

:peace:

From your decription you sound like you're looking for something in the size range of an 8-12 man tent.  If you're only going to be using it a few times a year you'll most likely be fine buying just about any brand.  Unless there is a major design flaw or defect most tents, even the cheap ones, will be pretty waterproof when set up correctly.  Once a cheap tent gets some use is when you'll start to realize why it was cheap, but if you take care of it and only use it occasionally even a cheap tent can be a good tent.  One thing I'd look at when choosing a tent, especially a big one, is how many tent poles does it use and how the tent connects to the poles.  When setting up a big tent you want things to be as simple as possible so look for a tent with a minimal amount of tent poles and one that connects to the poles with hooks and not sleeves.  I currently have a 8 man tent that uses sleeves and sliding around 20 feet of pole into a sleeve is not fun. That tent rarely gets used anymore, I'd rather use my 2 man backpacking tent no matter what the situation.  Some tents use both sleeves and hooks, and most of these are fine as long as the sleeves are fairly short.  For the casual camper you don't really need anything fancy, just focus on getting something that is easy to set up.

I think you'll be best purchasing a large tent at a department store. They will probably be universally low quality, fine for a few uses a year.

Things you will want to consider: How much vestibule space, how many rooms, The door system, and the pole arrangement.

As the above poster said - sliding poles through sleeves is difficult and i would avoid that style of tent at all costs.

I would also avoid tents with too many zippers - you know the one's that have the fly attached to the mesh and you can zip the fly off? Screw that - keep it simple with a vestible/Fly and a seperate mesh door into the tent. IMO

I personally don't know why anyone would need a 3 room tent, unless you had kids or were sleeping lots of people in 1 tent. I would stick to a 1 room design for simplicities sake.

I am liking the look of the blackpine brand offered here: http://www.familytentcamping.com/

Thanks for the helpful replies. Also, would a place like Play it Again sports be a good option, or should I avoid used tents?

I would avoid used unless you can set it up first. Never know if there'll be missing or broken pieces.

Whats your price range anyways?

About $200 give or take, less would be great (I've found some nice large tents for about $140) but I'm willing to go a little higher too. I probably won't be using it a whole lot, but I do plan on doing some regular camping with it too.

For convenience sake i would lean towards a dome style tent with large vestibule. You should be able to find a nice one for less than $200 at a department store.

Multiple rooms are NOT necessary for regular camping, IMO

In my experience, you get what you pay for. If it`s just car camping for 2 ppl I would get a dome tent rated for 4-6 ppl. That should be enough room to stretch out without taking 2 hours to set up. Expense goes up when you start trying to get soething roomy AND lightweight. More of the backpacking expedition tents. If you are going to unload it from the car and set up within 50' weight isn`t a big deal.

In my opinion I would go for quality over roominess. The bigger the tent, the more seams there are which means more chances for leaks. And any tent you get needs seam sealer applied before using. I have stayed relatively dry in a good tent during hellacious storms while I have been thouroughly soaked in crappy tents. It`s no fun to wake up at 3am and your air mattress is floating! That right there will have your hubby swearing off camping forever!

I don`t really have a problem with used gear. Sometimes you can find a pretty good deal. But definitely set it up first. Check the seams and corners for stress areas that could eventually rip. Check the fiberglass poles to look for fading. This usually means it`s seen the sun`s UV rays a good bit and will eventually break. Try to get a tent with a bathtub type floor.....in other words one without seams. Don`t geet a tent with the cheap taffeta covered floor that looks like a tarp. Quality tents will have the same material for the floor as the rest of the tent. Always use a waterproof tarp under the tent. Also buy one that has a rain fly which can be put on and removed quickly. If you leave the fly on all the tie it can hinder circulation and make the tent stuffy.

Guess that`s all the hints I have. I would say check with play it again sports if you have one near you. I`ve always thought they were pricey but you might try to bargain with them or trade something you don`t need. Or if you have a local backpacking store even better! Oh yeah.....check any used tents for odors. Some can be musty, mildewed, or just serious body funk embedded in it! lol

Some entry level tents youmay be happy with would be Kelty, Eureka, etc. Stay away from colemans and what you woud find at sears or kmart or target or wally world. If you are lucky you may find a used North Face in your price range. Good luck!

I think in the stated price range, coleman or the like might be the only options.

Although BlueIndian offers great advice.

Sanguine.....that tent in the link looks like too much hassle for 2 people. And like I say....more seams equals more leaks. And I doubt it has a rain fly. If yoou just use a tent without a fly and you touch the side in the rain it WILL leak where yu touched it. Also...the bigger and broader the tent te more problems you`ll have in strong winds. Doing the festies in the summer you are bound to go through some rough weather.

I`m going to try a link here of something that might be more suitable and even cheaper to get your feet wet....or hopefully dry before you make a bigger commitment...

http://www.academy.com/index.php?page=content&target=products/outdoors/camping/tents_dome&start=0&selectedSKU=0214-40621-3007

Hopefully that link works. It definitely isn`t high end but if you got 1-2 summers from it I think you get your $ worth.

I`m looking at tents for the festies too but I need two smaller ones for a total of 5 ppl. I expect to shell out probably $400 for the two. Tents can get pricey but you get what you pay for..

Ozark Trails Hiker Dome is one of my bigger tents, I use it on family outings. Sleeps 4-6 depending on the people, I think I paid less then $200 for it at Walmart. 9 ft. by 12 ft.. Spacey for 2 people with plenty of room for an air mattress. Sets up quickly. It's too bulky for a backpack trip but for drive up camping it is pretty decent. Had it for a few years now and have not had any problems with it. One thing I always do is treat my tents with a water proof spray at least once a year.
