Stupid air exchange question

Ok I have always closed up my jars tight when colonizing and haven't run into many problems. I hear that if I increase air exchange I can speed things up.

What I was wondering is leaving the holes in the lid for inoculation untaped gonna be enough for air exchange.

When my jars hit about 75% I remove the tape and turn the jars upside down. They finish more quickly that way. Be sure to leave the holes unobstructed when turning them over.

loose is importand for gas exchange but yes tight and loose is just to hang about and i think this will speed up a little bit but exchange is necessery otherwise it slows

I've never taped my holes, unless I'm using birdseed in quart jars. I just place coffee filters over my lids then fix them on the jar with rubberbands. Worked good so far.

When you allow the jars to breath is there a problem with loss of moisture that I need to look for or do things work as normal?

I haven't noticed any moisture problems. Like fiend said, the verm barrier should be plenty to keep contams out, I like to put the coffee filters on, just as an added measure.

I leave my jar lids tight but leave the holes unobstructed. If you have a verm layer it should be fine.
