Streaming Music On Android Phone
    #12474023 - 04/28/10 09:12 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

I'm looking for a good app to stream music from my pc to my android phone.  Something comparable to SimplifyMedia for the iPhone... anyone have any good suggestions?  Tytyty.  CJ

There is an orb player (winamp remote), and a few unofficial versions.

A friend of mine is working on an open source app, called 'five'

http://code.google.com/p/five/

It works fairly well, but isn't officially "stable" yet, but not far from it

on my machine, i have MPD output to an icecast stream.

i use the MPD remote PMix for android to control what is played. you just need to open a port on you router to allow controlling of MPD from the outside world.

its a little clunky for android cause you need to use 2 apps, one to listen to the stream and one to control what is played. however, i already had both set up so it wasnt a huge deal for me :shrug:

i had played around w/ setting up mpd on my desktop last night, was getting some error about localhost already in use or something to that effect, will figure it out eventually... am using wifi atm for my desktop until my house sells so i don't know how well it will even stream for now anyways.

what client are you using?

personally, i prefer ncmpc or ncmpc++ cause its super light and plays right from a terminal.

if you want something with a gui though.. sonata and gmpc are both nice. esp since youre using gnome.

if you want something to fit better with the KDE desktop then QtMPC looks good. ive not used it for any extended period though.

Might sound silly, but why not just download pandora or a similar app and stream from the internet?

pandora and lastfm are really nice when you dont really care what you hear.

if i want to listen to ONE artist/album it kinda falls flat..

dont get me wrong, i love lastfm.. i still need my music collection with me 24/7 though. :shrug:

well, i got sonata and after a lot of messing around w/ my /etc/mpd.conf, sonota finally made a music database.... anyways, then i tried logging in w/ the android app pmix, but am getting a socket not connected error trying even just the wireless....

my router firewall settings seem ok... not sure what gives

hmm.. not sure. did you set a password and not specify it? i dont use a password.. in all honesty im going on security through obscurity.. not the best idea but whatever..

oh and did you restart mpd after making changes to the config?

sudo /etc/init.d/mpd restart

heres my mpd.conf:
Code:
music_directory "/home/frith/Music"
playlist_directory "/home/frith/.mpd/playlists"
db_file "/home/frith/.mpd/mpd.db"
log_file "/home/frith/.mpd/mpd.log"
error_file "/home/frith/.mpd/mpd.error"
pid_file "/home/frith/.mpd/mpd.pid"
state_file "/home/frith/.mpd/mpdstate"

user "frith"
port "6600"

audio_output {
type "alsa"
name "My ALSA Device"
device "mpdvol" # optional
}

mixer_type "alsa"
mixer_device "mpdvol"
mixer_control "MPD"

using this config, whatever client im using has control of volume also. its not just the system volume. to get that control you need to add the following lines to /etc/asound.conf:

/etc/asound.conf
Code:
# mpd volume control
pcm.mpdvol {
type softvol
slave.pcm "dmixer"
control {
name "MPD"
card 0
}
}

once you add that you have to restart alsa (the system that manages your sound) and then mpd for the changes to take effect. type:

sudo /etc/init.d/alsa restart
sudo /etc/init.d/mpd restart

These phones come with 16GB or so of storage on them why can't you just put mp3s on the phone and play it off there?

our mpd.conf are pretty close, except i had a -  bind_to_address        "localhost" in there
also when restarting the mpd, i got:

* Stopping Music Player Daemon mpd                                      [ OK ]
* Starting Music Player Daemon mpd                                            listen: bind to 127.0.0.1:6600 failed: Address already in use (continuing anyway, because at least one address is bound)
volume: deprecated option 'mixer_device' found, moving to 'alsa' audio output
volume: deprecated option 'mixer_control' found, moving to 'alsa' audio output
                                                                        [ OK ]

should i remove that line from it?

yeah i would remove it. thats probably what the problem is. its not allowing connections from anyone buy localhost (your computer).

remove the line and restart. see if that works.

well, it restarts w/o the error when i remove it, but w/o the bind address to localsource it seems that neither sonata or gmpc will connect :/  err hmm, lemme see what happens when i put my ip address as the host in em lol, i just woke up

heh.

if you put 127.0.0.1 it should work.

127.0.0.1 is your loopback address.

thats what i use for my local machine.

for PMix, obviously, you want to use the machines internal IP (192.168...)

EDIT: and to control MPD with PMix outside of the house you have to set up port forwarding on 6600. and register a domain with dyndns.org (free). usually there is a space for dyndns in your router config.

use the dyndns url as your host for PMix.

gmpc says problem getting a response from ip address on port 6600 when i try to connect w/ it now that the bind to address localsource has been removed from my config file... am totally confused, i need a cup of coffee lol.

nah, gmpc won't connect w/ that or typing in localsource (same thing i believe) or my ip address or anything now that the bind to address localsource has been removed from my config file and mpd has been restarted
