Which mp3 player?

I have an 80gb ipod classic, but the headphone jack only plays out of one channel (definitely the ipod).. its starting to bug me (and I have student loans ).
I'm looking for a new mp3 player, but I don't want another apple product. Something along the lines of:
-60gb+ (formatted) -long battery life -Simple to use, non proprietary (if at all avoidable) software for transferring music -Hard wearing (probably the most important factor).
It would also be good if it had some sort of decent equalizer on it, but its not the end of the world if it doesn't.
Any suggestions?
I'll definitely be investing in one of these also:
(replug jack protector)

the zune HD's are unbelievably sick. i don't have one, but my brother and sister do. when my current mp3 player fails (5 years old sansa) i'll be investing in one of those.

The EXACT same thing happened to my 120GB iPod. What I'm gonna do is just get a Fiio E1, it's a portable amplifier that plugs into the bottom of your iPod so you don't have to use the messed up jack. Better sound quality + fixed iPod + remote thing =
Here's a picture of what I mean http://www.miccastore.com/images/gallery/26/2-500.jpg
And also, how is that replug jack protector supposed to work? Wtf is it supposed to do? Maybe I'm slow

Green and black thing is a headphone jack protector.
It breaks the connection if you drop the mp3 player and it bends so if its in your pocket it doesn't ruin the jack if the cable is twisted etc.
Its a really good idea, if I'd of bought one my ipod would still be working fine.

when your battery dies you pay like $99 or something and they send you a refurbrished one... or so it used to be. i dunno.
i just broke the screen and case on my 3 month old 64gb ipod touch. the whole thing is bent to shit and the sides are poped open. it still works for music and i can see everything but all the apps are essentially useless. i wanted to sell it the first week i had it.
i had it in my lap connected to my deck and got out of the car to see if i had a flat and saw it hanging halfway out the door. I was pissed.

IMHO if you're looking for music quality still the best player is the Rio Karma. Not made anymore, and the drive is only 20G, but you can find it on ebay etc. Very retro
FLAC, true gapless playback, decent amp, etc etc.
Something like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/Rio-Karma-20GB-1-8-HD-32GB-CF-Card-64GB-SSD-Drive-/160426646509?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Other_MP3_Players&hash=item255a2c5bed#ht_2633wt_1165

I would say these days there are alot of choices, depends what you want I guess, I've discovered the best MP3 I've had to date, by far the most amazing sound quality, the best interface, and very sleek, the battery lasts 12+, its made by cowon;
http://www.cowonglobal.com/product_wide/product_mp3_main.php
some of the best products I've seen so far, fuck a zune, fuck a ipod, check these out. I use a iAudio 9, with Kicker EarBuds.
http://www.cowonglobal.com/product_wide/iAUDIO9/product_page_1.php
its a sick mp3 player, I've had alot of them previously, iPod touch/iRiver/Sony/Samsung the iPod touch is dope for obvious reasons, but if you truly want a mp3 that is going to deliver gnarly sound quality, with a full band eq, fm tuner/high quality 256kbs audio recorder/ flash player/flaac player, then I would defintely check these out. I paid 115$ for a 8gb.
the s9 looks sick too, http://www.cowonglobal.com/product_wide/COWONS9/product_page_1.php

I opted for this in the end:
8gb, small and sturdy with a decent battery life. The price was the kicker; £40.
As for the replug thing, it plugs into the headphone jack and saves it if you pull at the headphones (the reason my ipod broke):

i wish there were more high capacity mp3 players on the market.. shame there is only like 2 or 3 choices..
that sansa gets awesome reviews though. probably cant beat it for the price.

i love Cowon but they need a high capacity drive.. esp when dealing with FLAC.
60gb should be a minimum.. 120gb is more practical as a baseline.

Just buy a used nano or something for like $100, unless you really need 80 gigs (what is that like like 40 days worth of music?) I had a sansa 1gb (only like $20, and this was 2 years ago) it was cool but navigation on it sucked, and it couldn't shuffle songs very well (all it did was play a few random songs over and over out of my 1gb collection)
I'd get some hi end headphones instead of an expensive mp3 player tho

80gb is not a lot of music when dealing with lossless audio.
ipods use a proprietary (and quite honestly, shitty) transfer protocol and database system.
unfortunately they are the only thing on the market that comes in a decent capacity and isnt as big as a city block..

Oh For me ipods are just a way to kill time when i'm travelling in between classes or something, sound quality isn't that important I mean when your outside with the noise of cars and people talking I wouldn't try to make a big effort/expectations for good quality audio
The earbuds that promise good sound quality w/ ipods break really easily, (like they usually last 1-2 months before there is obvious performance deterioration) Plus you would look like a total wierdo with your expensive portable setup on full volume in public
For good sound quality I just use good headphones w/ my laptop or something, or listen to the music on my car stereo

Well I'll be using the thing with 320kbps mp3s with my Sennheiser HD-25s headphones. Hopefully only having 8gb will help me keep the music on there fresh, cause I only seem to listen to a small amount of my collection of music.

i dont know what headphones youre listening with..
there are most definitely good earbuds that last longer than a few months.
i have a pair of Shure SE110s for when im walking the dog or riding the bike. ive had them for a few years and they still sound amazing.
when im at home i have a pair of Beyerdynamic DT770 Pros and a pair of the DT880s also.. my preference being the 770s.
