For an extra 120 bucks that'll give you a fast graphics card and twice as much hard drive space, a faster processor, and more ram. Definitely shop around some more and always compare compare compare!

as far as i can tell, the registry remains largely unchanged.

WinFS was supposed to replace NTFS in vista. development was taking too long and MS decided to push it back to the next release. however, Win7 came and there is still no WinFS

Well that's pretty dissappointing, I expect ALOT more from a company that spends 5 years a chunk on major releases. At least NTFS isn't as temperamental as FAT was.

What's most irritating is that windows still runs on the monolithic kernel model. It's a security issue, and eventually boils into a full blown functionality issue when the registry is directing bloated(or even buggy) daemons to load.

The bottom line is, whatever works for you. I'm not too particular on converting folks to Linux, so I prefer peoples try to avoid converting me to Windows or OSX.

word on the street is that Asus has terrible customer service...so if you go ASUS- better pray that nothing malfunctions.

I still recommend HP.

and to frith; that's great that "lenovo" is the brand for you...However, OP asked for a music production laptop under $1,000, which thinkpads don't really offer- at least not the performance he needs.

so save it for another thread :bigblunt:

HP offers: best bang for your buck in today's market notebooks, nice design, good specs, good hardware build, decent customer service.

Asus are for gamers who are looking for the best hardware for the best price, and place their bets that nothing will malfunction.

Dell and Lenovo are for those business professionals who will pay the extra dollar for the sense of security.

Apple products are for those who want to be part of the trend.

If I had heaps of money around, I would build an "ultra PC"; quad core 3.33ghz, 16GB DDR3 ram @ 1600mhz, 500GB HDD space @ 15,000RPM, and a dual(ATI HD5970).

That would come out to about $5,000 and I could modify it anytime I want

I'm on an ASUS right now, and my first laptop I bought was an ASUS. It lasted me just about 4 years always turned on until eventually the DVD drive and battery started to fail. But hell, every 4 years calls for an upgrade anyway right?

4 years is a good life for a heavily used laptop.
