Is Straw Worth It?

Hey good folks, with my future grow I wish to grow as many mushrooms as possible. Crap is not an option unless one knows of a brand name which does not stink up the house when being pasteurized. So I was left with the only other option as a bulk substrate, which is straw. How much of a difference will straw make than just casing some birdseed jars? Is it worth doing it? Thanks for everyone's help.

Well it depends on your substrate to spawn ratio. If your ratio is like 1:10 you're likely to see about 10 times as much weight as you'd get from just casing your substrate. The only down side is it adds an extra week or two to your growing time, but that extra week or two is worth it.

I have not fruited birdseed (yet) but I can tell you that a straw or straw/dung substrate beats the hell out of PF cakes.

Doesn't really smell bad. Just pasteurize it when no one is around and turn on the exhaust. I doubt anyone will even notice.

You're right I wasn't thinking straight, I usually get about 10 times more from a 1:20 substrate to spawn ratio, not a 1:10 ratio.

Thanks for telling me that straw actually does stink up the house, saved me some trouble. I wish there was a bulk substrate that doesn't smell when pasteurized

I know 6T has that good compost, but I didn't think it was pre-pastuerized.
