Vista waking up by itself
    #12436090 - 04/22/10 04:47 AM (14 years, 30 days ago)

G'day everyone
I've got a PC running vista, I didn't have much choice as when I got my broadband adaptor it wouldn't work under linux, I hear the new kernel can handle it but my dvd drive fucked up so I'm stuck with vista at the moment.(I'd try a USB version but if anything goes wrong I'll be stuck without web access)
Anyway when I put it into sleep mode it goes to sleep and then after a few minutes it wakes back up and I can hear a lot of hard drive activity while the lid is still down.
When I open the lid the logon box appears with a switch user button visible.
I have the bios set not to wake on any events so I wonder if I have a trogan or something similar.
I have spybot search and destroy and current norton antivirus.
When I put it in sleep mode I had been leaving my internet adaptor plugged in.(until I noticed the problem)
Now it still wakes up by itself and I can hear the HDD in an active read or write mode not just a standard standby spin.
I've checked all my software that does periodic scans and none coincide with the events I've noticed.
Has anyone else had this problem ?
There is an older thread about similar shit, I'm wondering if there is anything more recent

I used to have a PC that did what you're describing. Sometimes laser mice will activate if you so much as bump a table. I also noticed on the machine that it would enter sleep mode and wake up on its own - doing what you're describing.

I ended up just disabling it in Vista and disabling the hotkey. I have my screen saver set as power-saving monitor with prompt for login enabled. If I ever go afk and something were to happen, a password would still be needed to get in.

I wouldn't worry too much about it but there are a few things I would do:

#1 - Get AVG Free edition. Norton and AVG both kinda suck, but AVG's better and there are addons for FireFox.

#2 - CCleaner. Your best friend. Wipes away a ton of shit you never knew was there. Vista does a very good job of keeping stuff you never wanted kept.

#3 - Advanced SystemCare. Another goodie, especially if you know your computers. The security features it offers are amazing, especially task manager and startup (which works better than what comes with Windows platforms).

#4 - MalWareBytes > SpyBot SnD.

I only use them to make sure my computer's optimized since I've nothing to hide. For someone who does, they're very valuable programs, and all have the ability to completely wipe them instead of going to the recycle bin. Your bin even creates another folder for a secondary recycle bin, so pretty much anything you've ever emptied can be recovered.

Good luck. Chances are it's just Sleep Mode & Vista being shitty and/or an optical mouse.

I am not sure why a virus would wake your computer.  Its probably just windows.

There are lots of tools you can use to see if you have been hacked, I would start with tcpview and rootkit revealer.
