Pot enthusiasts celebrate 4/20 at UC
Santa Cruz
April 20, 2010 - ABC News
SANTA CRUZ, CA (KGO) -- Tuesday was April 20, also known as 4/20, the
day marijuana smokers and enthusiasts gather to celebrate and smoke.
Perhaps one of the biggest celebrations takes place at the University
of California, Santa Cruz at 4:20 p.m.
High Street marks the entrance to UC Santa Cruz, but on April 20 the
name takes on a new meaning.
But university officials were not amused by that or any jokes about the
day.
"Quite honestly, we wish it would just disappear," UCSC spokesperson
Jim Burns said.
The celebration of pot is not sanctioned by the university.
"It creates inconveniences for our faculty, staff and students here who
are on campus for legitimate reasons this afternoon," Burns said.
University officials do not make it easy for celebrants to attend the
big smoke-out in a meadow on the far outskirts of campus. The street
that leads to it is marked with "tow away" and "no parking" signs and
the closest gate closed by midday. But the crowds just keep coming.
"Everyone gets together and it's a celebration of happiness and peace
and springtime," student "Elly" said.
Not all of the 16,000 students took a toke or two on Tuesday.
"I'm kind of just mostly staying back and doing my homework and my
studies," Kirsten Anderson said.
In the meadow, people were chilling out; some maybe too much.
"Have a bunch of fun in the field, celebrate good times," student Matt
O'Bannon said.
No one was getting busted for smoking at UCSC Tuesday; in fact, it was
a captive audience for November's ballot measure legalizing marijuana.
"I think California is finally ready to do what needs to be done,"
marijuana legalization supporter Mark Anthony said.
And at 4:20 p.m., a cheer went up from the thousands gathered at the
meadow, as did a giant cloud of smoke.
Yea i don't know the full truth about 4:20 .. always heard it mystelf that it was the original police code for possession of marijuana .. ...but who knows great holiday! ... and should be the meaning of ones choice to the pursuit of happieness!
Peace brothers and sisters of the herb! and all natural substances!

I wish I could have been a part of something like that, but I had my 3yo. son with me for the past few days and couldn't partake till just about an hour ago. Oh well, those hippie chicks looked nice, I've been meaning to start kicking it in Santa Cruz.
Well sorry, but it never will. And what is the problem? "It causes an inconvenience?" Why don't they just sanction he event so they can regulate it? Kind of like how the government should legalize it and regulate it so it stops being an "inconvenience."
Not many people outside of the culture even understand that what they are witnessing is a fine example of civil disobedience.
That reporter seemed kind of like he had a contact high, perhaps a slight high off of second hand smoke.
fuck boulder. i fuckin hate that crowded as rich kid, trustafarian town. bunch of frat/sorority minded jocks, "i'm so cool, i'm too cool" hipsters, and a whole shit load of hype-ies, who all know everything there is to be known in the world.
yeah they have a killer smoke out, but god damn, i hate that town. and if you ask anyone who lives outside of boulder, what they think of boulder, you get just about the same reply.
sorry if you live there man and you like it for whatever reason.
If it was legal that inconvenience could instantly become a major tourist-trap income once a year for the campus and other businesses in the area. They're sitting on a pot of gold...
Also, seriously, if I heard him say that, say I just walked by, I would stop and I would say NO! Mr. Credential Society, I am here for legitimate reasons too, but today we're going to get stoned! So you can shove your one day of inconvenience up your ass, because we live it day and night the other 364!!!

Hahaha, nah man, totally agree. I deff dont live in boulder; just no one's smoke out compares. 3rd annual for me. But i must say; the massive awesome smoke out is losing ground fast. This year was NOTHING like the previous years... showed up almost late but still, seems to be on a downhill.
But yea, i dont live there and like you said; since i dont - i hate the place!
Do you personally put the movie into words for the forum? Cause I was reading the text as the movie was running and the words were a little off, off enough that it seemed like somebody that didn't make the movie wrote, ya know?
seems like that vic lee is pretty cool. sounds like he might burn down a few himself. "let me put it this way. this joint was really rockin today" "peace, vic lee abc news"
