So here is one of your photos of your grow, which you posted in another thread. You say these are Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata.

My question is, did you case these with perlite??

The cultivated mushrooms in your pics are Cubensis without a doubt. And you do have pictures of outdoor Ovoids. So whose to say you couldn't send out an ovoid print instead of the cultivated print. Even in these pics you have 2 different mushrooms. Cultivated and Wild.

Can you take a good quality picture of the cap and spore prints together of the cultivated and the outdoor ones side by side. I would bet the cultivated mushrooms have a dark purple print and the outdoors would be more brownish purple. And any TI in the hunting forum would probably agree. Post the pics and ask for an ID.

I can assure you that your cultivated specimens are Psilocybe cubensis without examining the microscopic features, I'm sorry your experiment went wrong, maybe you will have better luck in the future.
P. ovoideocystidiata is a woodlover that requires a long season to build up enough metabolites before fructification will occur, it will take a year or longer after inoculating wood chips before this species will fruit!

Yes, patience is required for these wood lovers, many people say that the fruiting trigger for P. subaeruginascens is a mystery but I'm certain that it all comes down to patience and letting the mycelium consume enough of the wood, time will tell:cool:

Why do I get the feeling that there's a ton of pictures that you're holding out on us.  Definitely show us the caps and prints next to each other, should resolve this pretty quickly.

Yea, that's what I'm excited for, the indoors pictures.  What time of year did you discover them and in what part of the country?

They are bound to change morphology when domesticated, but to the point where they look identical to another mushroom species?  I don't know about that one.

You mentioned sending some samples/pictures to some experts.  Did you do that yet?  You should if you want an honest opinion.

Yea, I actually have a strain of cube I got from someone called "NJ6", claims to have been found in the wild in nj...will be looking into the reality of that claim in the near future.

That was my assumption, but I would like to prove it with some concreteness.  I have no idea where the strain actually originated, or even where it claimed to have originated from, just somewhere in nj, but it's a ridiculous claim to make, I agree.

This guy is mixed up somewhere. mycologists have taken a long time to domesticate the Ovoid. It has been done but it is not that easy to just throw spores on BRF cakes and grow like Cubes it just doesn't happen. He's a noobie that wants to say he's done something everyone else has taken time and patience to do and he's done it without any effort. I'm not saying it can't be done but he didn't do it. Those cultivated ones are cubes and that's it, It doesn't take mycology work to see that. They resemble no known cultivated Ovoid that I have seen yet.

Let RR look at the pic and then tell him he's wrong, No TI's or TC's even want to comment cause it's ridiculous already

Some of the pictures of the ovoids you found look a lot like ovoids.  What's being debated here is whether you fruited them indoors.  Do you or do you not have more pictures to show?  Where did that picture of the tray you had fruiting indoors go?

Paducah, this photo in your gallery has a caption indicating that these are cased in verm... but it looks like everything in here is cased with perlite. And it looks like the cakes were rolled in perlite. And it looks like verm is part of your terrarium floor... the whole thing seems backwards. Can you explain how you are cultivating?

He is trying to say that these are cultivated Psilocybe Ovoideocystidiata. These are P. Cubensis without a doubt. They have no characteristics of an active woodlover that I know of.
If the OP would just post in the ID forum he would find out

He may have attempted to cultivate the wild species that he found that looks like a good match for P. ovoideocystidiata but it obviously either became contaminated with P. cubensis or he mixed the spores/cultures up somehow, be sure to label everything correctly.

It's possible that he did inoculate the cakes with P. ovoideocystidiata spores that somehow were contaminated with P. cubensis spores, if this is the case the P. cubensis mycelium is much more robust than the P. ovoideocystidiata mycelium and it would have won the battle!

I'm amazed that he still thinks the cultivated specimens are something other than P. cubensis after so many people have told him otherwise, microscopy is not necessary because P. cubensis is such a distinct species that is readily recognizable from it's macroscopic characters.

That is exactly what I mean you said it better. He got mixed up somewhere.
He did do a decent job growing mushrooms but just not Ovoids
It's just unbelievable he doesn't understand that he has something different than he thinks.

Good job OP but please believe us that they are cubes.

No doubt, they are nice looking Psilocybe cubensis, that's why I mentioned earlier that he should post the pictures in the Mushroom Cultivation Forum, this is not really the right forum for this subject.

Look good.  could you describe the procedure you used to cultivate them?  Did you do brf to bulk, or grains to bulk?  Also, if you couldn't get a good spore print from them, as you showed in the earlier picture, how were you able to get a clean culture going?

Buddy, you gotta listen.

They are cubensis. What you have experienced is what experts call the placebo effect.
The people who have told you that those are cubensis have spent years and years in this field working in front of laminar flow hoods and hunching over microscopes.

They know what they are talking about, you do not.
Not being abrasive, just honest.
Fruiting woodlovers indoors is still experimental. If the expert mycologists around here are having trouble with it, you're very likely to fail.

Props for trying, but y'know what they say.. try try again.

There is a reason for that.

Dude.  Did you not learn your lesson when you made the print the first time?  That print is going to come out horribly.  Tin foil is best, but if that's not available, some sort of plastic or rigid paper will work too.  But a napkin?  Come on.

Did you happen to see any bruising on those things?

Well, he should be able to grow out on agar and transfer away from contams. As long as there's no cube spores on that napkin, that is :hehehe:

I did, they look nice.  Congrats on your finds.

Sorry, I thought it was a napkin because it looked like it was wet, which will definitely result in a messy print.  It can work though I guess.  I hope it does.

I would like to take a moment to point out that if whatever you grow looks like cubes again, that we'll be back where we started

You are  exactly correct. But if I pay closer attention, I will feel more confident that I am right and I WILL waste a pros time. I'm actually sure that they grew in the begining, but I just didn't keep track of which cakes were which. That's the only reason I have doubts. I bet that they will grow. It really only makes sense. they are a sapophyte. Given the right temps and they will grow. It doesn't matter if it's wood or rice, it just needs nutrition. Ever heard of a vegetarian?

Yea, I'm one, but that has nothing to do with this situation.  Ovoids are wood lovers, which means that in order to fruit, they need some sort of a wood source.  However, I have seen someone get cyanofriscosas to pin on nothing but coir, which is interesting, so I would certainly be interested to see you try to get a pf cake to pin.  I know for certain it will colonize the cake, but whether it pins is a whole other story.  Keep us updated for certain.

Here's what I would recommend.  Don't bother with the antibiotics or trying to save those jars.  Take a new print, and do this:

http://www.shroomery.org/8514/Agar-substitute

Or, since you're finding live specimens, take some stem butts and sandwich them between two pieces of cardboard.  Once fully colonized, take a syringe of sterile water, squirt it on the cardboard, swish it around for a bit, and suck it back up.  Then inoculate your jars with that.

Good luck!

They may, but I've never heard of anyone using it.  That doesn't mean you shouldn't.  Try it out and see what happens, who knows, you may be on to something.

it would only help bacterial infections like the clap or syphilis, so the most common contams like trich, cobweb, and other mushroom species will survive.
