Ethical Population Control Procedure
    #1241943 - 01/23/03 07:11 AM (13 years, 10 months ago)

Okay... this is all just a thought experiment...

I think we all agree that mandatory sterilization is pretty much a fucked up thing.
HOWEVER, what if the sterilization was completely reversible (and cheap) with no major side effects?  Everyone would be required to have the procedure done.  Then, if they wanted to have a child, they would have to show that they can afford to provide the basic necessities to their child before they could have the reversal.

...--=={Pause right here}==--...

Okay, remember this isn't my opinion... it's just a thought experiment.
So don't jump all over me.

Solutions to ethical dilemmas oftentimes postulate untenable presuppositions.

This thread is no exception.

I like the idea though.

This could quite easily lead to Big Brother setting criteria for unsterilization and you know what that means. Gentic engineering through evolution, while not necessarily evil, does not lead to the diversity that is essential for social and cultural growth.

Sterilization is not as effective a means of population control as...ohh..I don't know... the HIV virus..

Mr_Mushrooms: Solutions to ethical dilemmas oftentimes postulate untenable presuppositions.
This thread is no exception.

Well, I don't think this kind of technology is that far off. You know, maybe instead of tubular ligation, it would be implantation of a tubular constriction device that could be opened and closed via an external stimuli (radio frequency).

--------
As some have already pointed out, Big Brother is very much a part of this discussion. However, maybe instead of making it mandatory... there would be some sort of incentive. Maybe something like free public transportation to those with the implant.

Also, as Shroomism has pointed out (well, sort of- I don't think HIV is effective as a birth control)... how would such a device affect STDs? I think it could have significant consequences in that department... but it would probably be most noticeable in less affluent populations.

I'm also wondering how social security might be affected by it all... the graying of America is a major issue. I can see a point at which our children will be taxed at 80% to pay for our retirements... that would be a fucked up day... I wouldn't want that for my children.

I think all shroomerites whose handle begins with the letter "S" should be sterilized. This would include schlorch, shroomism, sw---, er - never mind *blushes*.

There is a statistical tendency that can be seen in western Europe and the U.S. As a population's material wealth increases, they tend to have less children. I prefer this route to that of getting my testicles sliced and diced by Doctor Benihana.

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

Why everyone? Why not just women?

Other than that, this is looking good through my small beedy eyes. Of course, they should first try handing out birth control pills, condoms and morning-after pills like candy.

i think the route of showing proof that you can financially care for a child, if that was the intended means would not fly. because then you start going into morality debates as in, is it right for you to stop my gene pool because i can't afford 'by your standards' to care for a child.

as far as population control in places like poverty stricken african regions. im sure they would actually be willing to partake in a nonpermanant sterilization program, so long as they can comprehend that the less food they need to provide for offspring, the more food they get to eat.

but also. if you impose a population control, you have to remember the chinese. who were only alloud to have 1 child. so the familys would kill their own babies if they were femal, so to carry on the family name. and now the ratio of men to women in china is a frightful thought. especially since they have a million man army and no females to fuck. i wouldn't be surprised if a similar case senerio were to arrise if a control was imposed by law
