Multaplying a computers potential?
    #1240844 - 01/22/03 05:44 PM (21 years, 2 months ago)

What if, instead of using 0s and 1s, a computer used 1s-9s?

Is it eaven possable? I wouldn't know, but it's just a thought.

well i think the 0's and 1's just stand for a difference.  There's no need for more digits.
Like 01101 could stand for 8 and  000110 could stand for 9, see? the combinations are already endless.

i think thats how it works

It would be ten times faster, but ten times bigger, since you would need more complex processor stuff. And you would have not enough money to buy the thing.

Mhm... actually, it would be ten times faster and probably a thousand times bigger and a thousand times more complex.

it's not so much about 1 vs. 0 as it is 'on' vs. 'off'
that's what the 1's and 0's mean

If 000110 would be 9, wouldn't it be more consolidated by just having 9 instead?

you'd need a solid state system that could represent 9 states. we have transistors that are boolean, 0 or 1 and they work very simply and efficiently and can scale to whatever higher base system you want to use.

I don't know wheater i'm right or not, but I don't think it makes a significant difference if you'd try to develop such a system. The 'On' 'Off' electrical current method works.

Yeah, well I don't really know much about electroonics or microchips. This was just one of those thoughts that just popped into my head.

i've actually taken a class on this kinda stuff. was really interesting learning how computers create logic.

you'd need a solid state system that could represent 9 states.

I think that could be done, given today's technology. The problem, I think, is that the algorithm becomes so much more complex. If you want to add one to a binary number, you simply switch the first digit which is zero and switch all digits below it. If you want to add one to a decimal number, it becomes a lot more difficult: "If the state is 1, make it 2. If the state is 2, make it 3. .... If the state is 9, make it 0 and set all states below to 0, too. Switch the first digit which is not 0."

But now, this got me thinking. If binary arithmetic is that much easier, why did we invent the decimal system in the first place? Okay, we have 10 fingers, but don't we have two arms, two legs, two ears, two eyes and two heads? It doesn't make sense. The decimal system is bullshit. Memetic evolution gone mad.

I would just go with a biological computer which would probably be come conscious and kill us all  or have a quantom computer where i think that it could be in two staes of 0 an 1 at the same time.

Yeah, those rock! And we already have the software. All we need is the actual computer.

But an unstoppable biocomputer killer machine would be cool, too.

I think when we have then alot of things could be explained, I remember seeing somewhere that it could be even possible to send information backin time. I could be wrong though, but at a quantom level things dont make much sense, like you can change the out come of something just by mesuring it.

I don't know about the time travel thing, but a quantum computer would be the end of mathematics. We could prove everything in mathematics in a couple of minutes. That would probably get us close to the end of physics, too. And when we are at the end of physics, we will probably be at the end of psychology. And when we are at the end of psychology, we would understand everything and could spend the rest of our life playing pacman on a fucking quantum computer.

Just as long as we dont have to use Windows Quantom XP.
