Psychology behind Violent Video Games

I'm wondering if anyone here has ever done research of came across any interesting articles in psychology journals/magazines on studies about violent video games (VVG)?
Do you think VVGs causes players to become more violent?
Or do you think people who play VVGs are violent to begin with and thus interested in violence? If this is so, would playing VVGs act as an outlet for the pent-up violent thoughts or nurture these thoughts?
Discuss.

It all depends on the individual's personal wiring imo. It depends on how they integrate playing the games with reality.

People play video games to experience life vicariously through another.
More you hate your life, more likely you will play video games.

Yea, those people playing World of Warcraft who spend their whole life pumping up their mountain dwarfs to level 99 are probably trying to compensate for something.
I have a hard time imagining them fighting off super model babes while exclaiming "bitch, I don't got time to fuck you, I'm trying to get my mountain dwarf to level 99"

I think that some people are highly impressionable, and very influenceable. Kids play in all kinds of ways, and some of their games can be considered "cruel" or "violent", but the truth is that the majority of them are turning out alright, while only a few will start acting violently. My guess is that, if if wouldn't be for video games, they would still be influenced by other moments and situations filled with violence.

A quick google search found...
Quote:
An update on the effects of playing violent video games
Craig A.Anderson
Abstract This article presents a brief overview of existing research on the effects of exposure to violent video games. An updated meta-analysis reveals that exposure to violent video games is significantly linked to increases in aggressive behaviour, aggressive cognition, aggressive affect, and cardiovascular arousal, and to decreases in helping behaviour.Expe rimental studies reveal this linkage to be causal. Correlational studies reveal a linkage to serious, real-world types of aggression.Methodolog ically weaker studies yielded smaller effect sizes than methodologically stronger studies, suggesting that previous meta-analytic studies of violent video games underestimate the true magnitude of observed deleterious effects on behaviour, cognition, and affect.
Does anyone know of research to contradict this?
