MYCOBAGS for first timers
    #1238314 - 01/22/03 01:30 AM (21 years, 2 months ago)

thinking of ordering a mycobag or 2 from sporeworks for my first grow ever. anyone think i should use jars? was thinking of fruiting in the bag...but yields will be lower. anyone heard about crushing up the colonized substrate and then placing the bag on its side as to increase surface area(like having it spread out like a casing instead of one big cake)?

Mycobags are cool but I would use jars for the first time. Jars are easier to handle then mycobags in certain respects and I have found that using jars produces far more mushrooms if you employ one of the many casing teks out there. In my opinion there is just less margin for error if you follow the PF tech out for the first time. Then after that do more advanced stuff.

In my experience they are much easier than jars, also it's good if you don't have a pressure cooker at this time. (No matter what anyone tells you, it's a good idea to have one)

Mycobags are incredibly easy to use. I innoculated and did not touch the thing for three weeks, how could it be any easier. When it was fully colonized i innoculated some straw using microwave for strerilization. The casing is on top and its in my fruiting chamber, If you are going to use a mycobag you should case or use it to spawn some bulk. The flushes will be way better and you wont have to deal with picking the fruits from the side of the bag. If you do leave it in the bag, do everything to prevent light from reaching the sides and bottom.

can you use a myco bag to impregnate a bulk amount of brf and verm, like if i just made couple pounds of the mixture, put it in a bag, and put some of the colonized myco bag in there, let that shit colonize then cased it

I honestly do not see your point here. Myco bags seem the simplest, lowest maintanence required, and the results are guaranteed to be wonderful, and UNCONTAMINATED, or a return of money or replacment product. I just don't see how any type of cultivation can be simpler than...1.INJECT....2.SHAKE'N'WAIT...3.HARVEST,ENJOY,AND WAIT FOR MORE.
SIMPLE AS 1..2......3

yeah, this is what most have said. its just that i dont have a PC, and the space. it just seems so practical to use the bags. anyway, anyone using bags: do you let the substrate(i mean you personally) colonize in the cake form or do you break it up and put the bag on its side so more surf area is exposed? im a first timer, so i dont think i should attempt casing. also i dont have a terrarium, nor do i want to hassle with one.

nah fuck mycobags, they might seem real easy, but you can run into problems, i have. The worst thing about them is the price! a myco bag, is just 1 cake.. and it costs anywhere from 15-25 dollars, its such a rip off, because if 1 of the bags gets messed up.. yours screwed for that much money..

yeah, thats a very valid concern of mine. 15 a bag, if it fucks up i might just fly a plane into the world trade center. but i am a lazy fuck and dont want to deal with jars. i figure ill try it once.
ok, can someone answer this question ive been asking? this is for people experienced with the bags: do you crush up the colonized substrate and put the bag on its side or just let it grow like a cake in a bag? i remember seeing somewhere someone put the bag on its side. who the fuck was it? arg. thanks bros. roscoes chicken and waffles is the best part of LA. random YES. false NO

I just grew mine with the bag standing up. I believe it says somewhere on sporeworks website that leaving the bag upright will maximize airflow. But I personally dont see anything wrong with spreading the substrate out and letting it grow sideways

I tried not one but 4 different mycobags and wasted several syringes on them with no results. What did I do wrong? Who knows! I followed the directions.... so anyway, I went back to cakes. They are easy, cheap, and they work. I recommend going that route for the first time. It's fun too.

hrm, so standing up maximizes gas exchange? ok. so lets say i was to break up the substrate and spread it along the side of the bag...when would be the right time to break it up? thanks

I ordered 4 myco bags from www.SPOREWORKS.COM and it's been 2 weeks almost, and they still haven't sent it out. I thought that they might be reliable, I guess not. I will not be goingback to them for any future needs. I'm really dissapointed in them. It sais on their website that it will take 2-3 days for processing, then whateve time untill I receive it via ups. So far no UPS tracking code even. I bought the bags on 1/11/03. Today it 1/22/03.

Anyway. The only reason I bought these bags, is because I don't yet have a PC.

I will be using these kind of bags, and making my own substrate, and PC ing Myself. They seem alot better and morre sterile than jars. I got a hoockup for a manufacturer, and he's sending me different size bags to try out, for free as samples. Than I can custumize it my way, my size, and buy in bulk, Prolly in the 1000's. We will see what happens.

Ok later
