Pins turn blackish if not birthed on time?
    #1240291 - 01/22/03 04:31 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

I'm using the pftek and although my jars are pinning all over, they haven't quite covered the entire substrate yet. A few of the pins are turning green-blue-blackish color, barely. Any thoughts as to whether this may be a contam, or is this a normal occurrence when not birthing after pins show? :smirk:

Thanks to all!

Kat

They may be aborts. If they stop growing all of a sudden they are aborts and should be picked immediately.

Cool, thanks.

Think I should birth early then, or just wait?

What I can't figure out is...
If light triggers pinning, but you don't want pinning until it's fully colonized... How do you look at the jars to see if they are colonized completely, without allowing them to be in light?

Thanks so much,
Kat

Birth your cakes as soon as you see pins forming. You are waiting much too long, birth now. Most people dont even wait for the cakes to pin but I read that you get better flushes if you do.

Oh my bad. I thought you were supposed to wait until the cakes were fully colinized at all costs.

Thanks again,
Kat

A little bit of light by looking at them is okay.. You can pin invitro(after they are fully colonized by giving them more light).. but you should probably birth after you see signs of pinning if you are using a basic PFTEK method, unless you somehow plan to fruit them invitro.

Should I cut off the tiny lil darkish spots on the cakes, now that I birthed them, or just leave them be and see what happens?

Thanks,
Kat
