Humans do not have instincts
    #12402548 - 04/16/10 08:23 AM (14 years, 4 days ago)

Instinct - Wikipedia
Quote:

Quote:

Instinct is the inherent inclination of a living organism toward a particular behavior. The fixed action patterns are unlearned and inherited.

Quote:

A number of criteria were established which distinguishes instinctual from other kinds of behavior. To be considered instinctual a behavior must a) be automatic, b) be irresistible, c) occur at some point in development, d) be triggered by some event in the environment, e) occur in every member of the species, f) be unmodifiable, and g) govern behavior for which the organism needs no training (although the organism may profit from experience and to that degree the behavior is modifiable).

Quote:

...sociologists argue that humans have no instincts, defining them as a "complex pattern of behavior present in every specimen of a particular species, that is innate, and that cannot be overridden." Said sociologists argue that drives such as sex and hunger cannot be considered instincts, as they can be overridden...Psychologist Abraham Maslow argued that humans no longer have instincts because we have the ability to override them in certain situations. He felt that what is called instinct is often imprecisely defined, and really amounts to strong drives. For Maslow, an instinct is something which cannot be overridden, and therefore while it may have applied to humans in the past it no longer does.

Any questions? :monkeydance:

I disagree with the notion that instincts must be sepcies wide. Evolution works on individuals and as such you could have instinctual variation within a species pretty easily imo

My advice is to find those things that give pleasure and do them often without too much attachment and relax and wait for the show to end.

I like free markets and all. Truly I do, at least in general, but there needs to be some kind of oversight in recognition of sustainability. Life works the same way, on a bunch of sustainable systems. Why not honor what made us what we are and take some lessons? Nature FTW!

Before you get too bogged down into the semantics on whether or not instinct is defined as something that can be overridden, your title is already false.
What do you consider suckling on the part of babies to be? Is that learned behavior?

"Before you get too bogged down into the semantics on whether or not instinct is defined as something that can be overridden, your title is already false"

According to your semantic bog, perhaps.

The statement is not false or true.

Not sure about that happening "pretty easily", although I do believe it's possible.

I was thinking that it's just a reaction to stimuli, similar to how getting slapped in the face causes people to say "Ow.".

Survival is driven by fear, which can be over-ridden by humans.

We can refuse to do both, which means they aren't instincts. :ghandi:

That's a reflex--are reflexes necessarily instinctual?
