Can I use perlite for top jar layer instead of vermiculite?

is it safe? do i even need a top protective layer if I sterilize the jars correctly?

I wouldn't, use verm. for BRF jars.

For what it's worth I used Perlite, worked fine for me. Except in some jars which I think I injected a contaminated syringe into.
