Mexicans have Higher Standards for Beef than Americans

Mexican authorities stopped a shipment of U.S. beef because they found that it was contaminated: The beef contained traces of copper higher than Mexican law allowed. But that didn’t stop the meat from being sold to Americans instead. That’s because the U.S. government has set no limit for copper in meat, according to an investigation by the Agriculture Department’s inspector general.
The USDA’s internal watchdog says the government has failed to monitor beef adequately to ensure it isn’t contaminated with residue from veterinary drugs, pesticides or heavy metals, the Agriculture Department’s inspector general says. And even when inspectors do find contamination they don’t have the meat recalled, according to the auditors.
The USDA is primarily responsible for meat safety while the Food and Drug Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency are supposed to set limits for dangerous substances. The three agencies have not established thresholds for some contaminants, such as copper or dioxin, which has resulted in tainted meat being sold to consumers, the auditors said.
“The implications of this audit are huge,” said Rep. Louise Slaughter, who is working to restrict the use of antibiotics in livestock. “Americans expect our government to protect the public health. Overuse of antibiotics on farms leads directly to antibiotic resistant pathogens. In addition, antibiotic and other residues in meat can cause potentially severe health consequences.”
USDA officials say they are taking steps to address the auditors’ findings, including checking into packing plants to find out which ones have high rates of residue violations. USDA inspectors also are working with the FDA to develop new testing methods for contaminants.

Amurka is a slippin' dawg. It's like the people no longer have the reigns, and the corporate slum lords are free to cast the Hail and Fire far from above the pedestals on which we gave them...

That's fucked up.

But apparently, Alberta is know for it's beef, so maybe I'm spoiled.
