I don't really take it anywhere aside from the living room sometimes, but it used to charge, now it doesn't much. Why?It used to charge automatically when plugged in.

Batteries have a lifespan. If this laptop is more than a year or two old, chances are it needs a battery replacement.
This should have been posted in the technology forum in my opinion.
Also, if you haven't taken the battery out in a while, the contacts inside get oxidized and you need to take the battery out, and stick it back in a few times.
Working at geeksquad, I've seen so many problems where laptops would not turn on or charge or anything, all it needed was the battery reseated.

It seems like laptops lose there ability to charge if you leave them plugged in all the time.
Also, what Bigboi said.
I am not sure why.

Yeah man, if it's a new laptop, then try reseating the battery a few times like I posted above.
If it's an older laptop, chances are the battery is just gone. Laptop batteries do not last longer than a couple of years. I've seen a lot go out within the first year.

don't leave the battery in when you have it plugged in at home. I usually always take mine out so it wont die as quickly

That's actually pretty good advice too.

ive had my laptop for 2 and a half years, and the battery life after a full charge is not even 3 minutes my laptops life is coming to an end, the charger is like its life support machine. of course i could buy a battery but at £40 i dont think so.

Thanks everybody.
I've had it almost two years. It's not a big deal, but I'll try reseating it.If it doesn't help, then maybe I'll get a new battery and not put it in if it's plugged in and don't plan on taking it somewhere else.

That's also bad for the battery. Never using it all is almost as bad as having it plugged in all the time. The ideal way to store a battery is around 0 at 20-40% charge, then every month or so full charge then kill the battery.

Leaving it plugged in all the time isnt bad for it. This isnt 1980... laptops are smart enough to know not to supply voltage to a charged battery.
I actually just bought a replacement battery off of ebay about an hour ago. Ive had the laptop for two years and it now only charges to about 40% of what it used to charge to.

Mine doesn't last more than 30 seconds without being plugged in.

That's not the reason having it plugged in is bad. It's bad for 2 reasons: heat, and because it stays 100% charged all the time, which is bad news for the lifetime of the battery.

The heat thing I may buy, but not the other. The laptop should be smart enough not to keep topping up the battery. Mine doesn't.

yeah but my laptop never having it in is the only way it survives, it boils without it and with it in it Chernobyls.

Rather than make a new thread, I figured I should post my laptop problem here as well.
My laptop always says Wirless Network Detected in Range, and then when I click it, It never finds it, or the network never appears. I know its not my router bc my roommate has a laptop that works fine. The weird thing is this laptop was working perfectly, until company came over and we had to disable the internet for a day (for a cable tv in the room). Ever since it hasn't worked at all.
Anyone have any suggestions?

I don't mean it kills the battery by over-charging, I mean it keeps it at roughly 100%. I guarantee if you remove your AC adapter after charging for a day, your battery will be at full charge, no matter how much you were using it. This implies it does constantly top it up. It is bad for the life of a rechargeable battery to be full all the time. Hence why it is suggested to store it at 20-40% when not in use.

hmm, I have my laptop set to not charge the battery unless its below 80%. Maybe I should change that?
Doesnt matter anyway I guess, this battery is already 2 years old.

Yeah and personally, I don't bother with any of the crap I've suggested. I have a laptop for convenience. If I have to buy a new battery every 2-3 years for convenience sake, then so be it.

I'd rather have a built desktop, and a netbook for mobility.

Most websites are optimized for 1280x1024 or 1024x768 so if you're web surfing or running office/business applications it's decent enough.
The keyboard on a netbook is also decent, only slightly smaller than a regular laptop keyboard which most of the space is taken up by the bezel around the keyboard.
Also, unfortunately the bigger the screen the bulkier the laptop has to be.

I would much rather carry around a 5.5lb computer that I am comfortable using than a 3lb computer I carry just because it's portable.
I find netbooks less convenient due to the size, not more. Viewing one window full-screened at a time is very inefficient, and a huge waste of time IMO. I like to have 5+ windows open and layered, and closer to 20+ on my dual 24" desktop. Productivity on netbooks is much lower than on a regular notebook.
