Tom Waits Appreciation Thread
    #12387995 - 04/13/10 08:14 PM (14 years, 6 days ago)

Probably the most genius singer/songwriter ever.  His musical evolution has been a beautiful journey and his lyrics are always top notch. And his voice, AHHHH. I have such a hard on for Tom Waits.

This ain't my favorite track but holy shit does this rule!

16 Shells from a Thirty-Ought Six

If ya got love for the man, show some appreciation or post a good video.

Tom is amazing.

The piano has been drinking

I love when he say, I'd rather have a bottle infront of me than a frontal lobotomy

Tom Waits is the man.

Rain dogs and Mule Variations are his two best, imo.

I'd probably agree that those are his two greatest achievements, Come on up to the House might be my favorite song by him.

I feel like Nighthawks at the Diner is probably the easiest one to listen to.  Has a nice relaxed feel to it but he is as witty as ever.

Awesome version of Singapore

Absolutely love this man. Nighthawks At The Diner is killer. My personal favs are Blue Valentine, Closing Time and Bone Machine.

I greatly enjoy Tom Waits as well.

But "the singer/songwriter ever" ... meh. I don't think so. His strengths are in composition, phrasing, arrangement, experimentation.

The fact that his music is so studio oriented in my opinion is a huge weakness, which
a) makes his music fairly lifeless and overly rational and
b) discredits his talent as a versatile live entertainer.
See, the music is just missing that needed umph of life.

Woah ho ho.  I have not seen him live but I have never heard a bad thing about his live performances, nothing short of phenomenal.

You did hit the nail on the head on what his real strengths are.  He's never afraid to go out there and do his things.  But his lyrics are always genius.

But hey, this is what opinions and perspectives are for.
