Any pro/semi-pro photographers or videographers in here?
    #12382670 - 04/13/10 12:14 AM (13 years, 11 months ago)

I'm trying to figure out what my next camera purchase should be.  I currently have a Nikon D200, but I want to start working with Canon.  I am contemplating on the 5D, 7D, and the T2i.  My primary use for this camera will be video since I can get amazing DOF using some sweet lenses.

If anyone has experience with any of the three I mentioned, please let me know as I am looking to make this purchase by July.

Thank You.

i would probably go with the least expensive T2i,
and use the saved money to stock up on all the Canon L glass i could buy.
Glass is where it's at. camera bodies/technologies become obsolete very swiftly, nor do they have a long shutterlife/lifespan for the money.
but the L lenses, that's where you should be factoring
in the equation.

edit: the 5d is discontinued btw.
the next one is the new 5dmkII which is like a $2600 body.

edit2: but if you're a baller, then i would do some research on which body produces the best video quality, & the most creative controls available while filming.

sorry for all the edits. i took a klonopin & i feel like spaghetti.

If you already have invested in a Nikon system, it doesn't make sense to me to switch to another platform that offers the same image quality, functionality and system expandability options. I say this based on day to day experience with Canon SLR equipment and regular, informal tests of Nikon stuff of friends and family members. Really, both systems are equivalent. I must say that I have no experience with video on either platform; I'm a photographer, not a cinematographer.

So switching doesn't make sense IMO from a commercial viewpoint. This depends, of course, largely on the investments you have actually made in (quality) lenses. If you haven't got any good Nikon mount lenses yet, then it doesn't make much difference at all from a technical viewpoint; either system will suit you fine.

Btw, keep in mind that if you intend to make use of shallow DoF in video applications, you're going to need quality tripods, dolly systems and focus assist systems for decent shots. Otherwise, you'll basically be stuck with a bunch of out-of-focus home video footage.

the only time a switch makes sense is of you're moving to another medium
like from digital to film or to a different realm like the medium format cameras...

Only the latter is a really valid case, actually. Most (all) of the film-era lenses of Canon's EOS system and Nikon's F-mount are usable on digital bodies with the same mount.

Agreed. Unless you have a ton of money to blow that is.

My Canon G9 Powershot (12megapixel; w/ very decent built-in videocam; stunning/accurate macro) does what I need it to do.

Obviously, there are better cameras "out there."  But bang-fer-buck, the G9 (at around US$360) is the best camera alive.

G9 is a great advanced-amateur cam, but wouldn't work because he needs an SLR so that he can change the lenses out.

It's weird that you brought up the concept of shooting video with an SLR. Literally about 15 minutes ago I was reading an article that talks about how they shot the entire season finale of House with a Canon 5D Mark II. Not sure if that fits in your price range, but if it does, I'd say go for that one.

Agreed, in-toto.  Just saying that--were a human strapped to a $360 budget and wanting to both capture great fotos up to 200m + macro + decent enough video/sound, for to bring back the goods--the Canon G9 is the very best dollar:performance camera.

notice the specific mention of the L glass they used for it:
"They used Canon prime lenses along with the 24-70 and 70-200 zoom"

L Glass = key.

24-70mm = $1,399.00
70-200mm = $ 2,499.00

Yeah, I agree L lenses are awesome. Back when I used to shoot sports for the news paper I was using the 75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS lens, which I believe was an L series. Never did get to use one of those nifty new white ones they have though, and I'm definitely not going to have the cash to buy one. I might try renting one if it's reasonably priced.

I was surprised that the guys who shot the House finale didn't use IS lenses. My hands are very shaky and I wouldn't have stood a chance trying to pull that one off.

Oh speaking of lenses... You ever hear about how canon made a 5200mm lens? Check out the zoom on this thing, it's fucking mind blowing:

yeah the one you were shooting with wasn't L. the zoom L's
are always the long white ones with a red ring & the short range L's always are black with a red ring.
& yeah, i wish i had the money myself. >_<
why must our hobbie be one of the most expensive??

notice the tricky wording:
"they didn't use an image stabilization rig of any sort for the non-tripod shots."

= they used the IS feature in the lens.

filming that show, was just a giant advert for Canon.

I was under the impression that the older L series lenses were all black, including the long ones. I remember when the white lens marketing campaign started about 5 or 6 years ago. I though they were black prior to that marketing campaign, but I could definitely be wrong. I didn't get even semi serious about photography until about 2 years ago.

As far as the hobby being expensive goes, have you ever tried renting a lens? I've looked into it and the prices seem reasonable enough. Another suggestion: find a professional photographer and let them be your mentor... Then they will let you borrow their lenses once they know you aren't some just some fool with en expensive camera. That's what I did and it's been great. The dude has taught me more stuff than I learned in 2 years of photography classes.

no, never rented a lens. i'd rather put that money toward
buying it.
whenever someone wants me to shoot their gig,
i just have them buy me what i need to shoot it with.
works out great =)

I just checked out that video about the manufacturing process of lenses. I always wondered how they were made... turns out they're make pretty much exactly like I thought they were.

Did you notice how he said the "EF 500mm f/4L IS USM" EVERY TIME he talked about the lens being made? First time I heard it I thought "damn, that's a really long name for a product. Second time I heard it I thought "WTF? Is he gonna do this every time?" By the third time I heard it I just started cracking up.

Cool.  I've been looking at all of my options and I've been leaning towards the T2i and about 3 or 4 lenses. Do you know of any company that makes a good matte box for a good price?  I already have a custom carbon fiber rail system that I scored for $100.  I was shooting on an HVX200, but I sold it because I gradually drifted away from video.  But now that I can get some amazing footage in much smaller form makes me very happy and allows for me to get sweet DOF without the need for my Letus 35mm adapater.

My plan is to get something like a wide angle zoom, 50mm f1.4, and maybe a 70-200mm f2.8.

i'm really not sure about a matte box for whatever lenses you'll attach to.
i don't shoot video, so i just use the lens hoods that come with the lens from canon.

i have the 50mm 1.4, it's a sweet sweet lens, very sharp with amazing bokeh.
it has L optics, but the micro-USM is slow & noisy as fuck.
i also burned out the motor within the 1st year i owned it,
canon fixed it no charge.

i also have the 24-105mm 4/L , it's beyond amazing.
i kinda feel bad for not using my 50mm like i used to even though i still take it with me wherever i go.
you should really look into this lens for your cinema work.

i too want the latest 70-200mm f2.8, & it will probably be my next purchase.
but again, my 24-105 would still be the primary lens, again, look into it.

also i'm not sure what kind of filming you'll do,
but you should also include lighting & sound in your budget as well.

Will an Arri kit, a jib, a few lavs, and a boom pole with shotgun suffice?  I have all the gear needed... lol.  I just need a new camera that can shoot video since I sold my HVX.

The only reason why you'd want L glass (or Nikon's equivalent) for video purposes is because of the smooth and silent manual focus adjustment. For the image quality and resolution you need for video, L glass is overkill in BIG capitals. Optically speaking, it really is nonsense: the focus system is the only valid reason for choosing that option. Otherwise, it's just a load of cash down the drain.

Nah, that's actually a pretty crappy consumer-level zoom lens. Optically not quite as bad as Tamron's non-IS alternative, but still, well, crap, really. One of Canon's worst contemporary zoom lenses. But good enough for video and small prints.

well what body you choose is up to your budget then.
as long as you pair it with L glass, you'll win.

what do you shoot anyway?

koraks, I'm looking at buying a decent telephoto lens, what would you recommend? I'm only shooting with a 30D, so it doesn't need to be a top of the line lens, I just want something that's going to produce sharp, crisp images. I'd prefer a 300mm lens but 200mm should work too.

I used to shoot music videos for various artists, shoot misc projects like commercials, seminars, meetings, etc...  I would rent my equipment too.  I sold my HVX because I was getting more into graphic design, motion graphics, and photography.  I wanted to keep all of my other gear because people still rent the jib, lights, and mics. Now that there are some sweet small body cameras, I can shoot some amazing footage without having to lug around so much stuff.

Do you know if there is a recording time limit on the T2i or is it only dependent on what size card you have in there?  I thought someone told me there is a maximum of 8 minutes per clip which is fine by me since I don't shoot anything that requires a long constant shot.

i'm not up to par with canons sensor algorithim when it comes to
filming, but why wouldn't one want superior optics for their videos?

Do you know if there is a recording time limit on the T2i or is it only dependent on what size card you have in there?  I thought someone told me there is a maximum of 8 minutes per clip which is fine by me since I don't shoot anything that requires a long constant shot.

a quick google search: "The maximum recording time it will allow is 30 minutes at a time (12 minutes in HD)"

koraks, I'm looking at buying a decent telephoto lens, what would you recommend? I'm only shooting with a 30D, so it doesn't need to be a top of the line lens, I just want something that's going to produce sharp, crisp images. I'd prefer a 300mm lens but 200mm should work too.

i would still invest in an L. regardless of the body.
you'll still produce professional results with that body paired
with an L.
L glass doesn't really depreciate, you can sell it
at cost or even more than you bought it for.
your body however, will die.

Speaking of used lenses, I am probably gonna have to buy a used lens because they're so damn expensive. What's are your opinions of buying used lenses? I bought my body used from KEH, and it has worked flawlessly so far.

Only the latter is a really valid case, actually. Most (all) of the film-era lenses of Canon's EOS system and Nikon's F-mount are usable on digital bodies with the same mount.

some of the f mounts done interchange well, just as some of the flash units
wont interchange, flash designed for newer nikons wont work on any other camera

the red ring isnt always present on the L, sometimes it's absent, sometimes it's yellow

anything documenting that? i would surely like to know if
that's true!

i always buy new because the warranty,
but if i had the chance to buy a lens used,
it would all depend on the asking price & the price difference between a new one with warranty.

as well as the condition of the lens itself.
i would also test the fuck out of the focus to make sure it isn't out of whack.

if i thought i was getting a good deal, & it worked perfectly,
i would buy it.

no the EF series, is for the EF mount, and there are
indeed Non-L lenses in the EF series, like the ones in your picture.
again, feel free to prove me wrong, becasue i would love to read about these mysterious L lenses. =)

According to Wikipedia, EF is the mount, EOS is the lens system, L is the lens. Talk about confusing. Then they gotta throw other acronyms out there like IS and USM. Every time you pronounce the name of the lens it just sounds ridiculous.

Edit: this might help it make more sense
EF= electro focus
EOS= electro-optical system
IS= image stabilized
L= luxary
USM= ultrasonic motor
