Wash cloth ?
    #1237078 - 01/21/03 03:27 PM (13 years, 10 months ago)

I was wondering about this step in the cultivation process ::

Now the culture jars need to be sterilized.  Place the jars in a large kitchen pot and add water so that water comes half way up the side of the jars.  Bring the water to a slow boil and place the lid on the pot. From the time the water starts to boil, the jars need 1 hour to be sterilized.  Water should not be bubbling and splashing all over the place. The jars should not be floating around in the water.  The substrate in the culture jars has the right amount of water in it already.  You do not want water leaking into the jars and changing the ratio.  The jars should not sit flat on the bottom of the pan.  Too much heat can transfer directly to the jars and cause a loss of moisture.  You can place a wash cloth inside the pan and set the jars directly on the wash cloth to help prevent too much heat from transferring to the jars

I'm specifically wondering about the wash cloth in the boiling pot. Wouldn't the cloth get burned from the heat @ the bottom of the pot? Can this step be done w/out the cloth? Is there any alternatives to the cloth?

Thanks!!!

Nope, your cloth should be fine. Mine was fine.....smelled a bit afterwards though.

Use a 100% cotton cloth... don't use anything with polyester, acrylic, etc. Cotton does not melt to the bottom of the pot and burn... most synthetic materials do.

As long as the wash cloth is under the water you are ok. It will not burn. It's like boiling water in a paper cup on camp fire coals(try it).

Use 100% cotton (good advise guys)

if i didn't have the lids for the jars, could I just use multiple layers of foil instead?

also

does the water really need to be filled up half-way up the jar, when boiling? would 1/4 of the way be sufficient?

Thanks for all the quick replies!!!!!!!! amazing

You can use just foil yes. As long as the water does not run out while boiling you can use less. It is the steam that does the work not the water level.

That may work, but the water could completely evaporate before sterilization is completed. Some people check in on their pots every now and then, and add water when necessary.

is there anyway to be 100% sure that no mold/bacteria has grown in the jar?

reading the guide, and it states that some bacteria/mold can "kill you". .......... ????? :X

also :: are the jars thrown away after usage? [infected, or not] ?

thanks again!

Sight and smell are your two biggest clues to contams. If you see colors DON'T SMELL!!! If it's all white, I like to give it a whiff before I dump it into my casing. If it does not smell like mushrooms, it probably is'nt. You can reuse your jars. Study up on the contams, if you have some pinks or purples in there it's best just to chuck the whole thing.

when you mean "chuck the whole thing" ...

should i throw the whole jar away? including the jar itself?

has anyone ever died from the "deadly bacteria" that is possibly inside?

*curious*

thanks

The washcloth wouldn't reach much more than 100 degrees C, well below the burning point of any material.

To kill all the contams and stuff or at least hurt it I like to nuke it for a few minutes.
