Mushrooms as substrate?
    #1236934 - 01/21/03 02:45 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

Would adding dried PC mushrooms to your substrate increase the potency of your harvest? Or would the Psilocin taken up by the shrooms just be converted back into whatever it needs to grow?

Are there any OTHER alkaloids that would be taken up by mushrooms?
So you could have uber-magic mushrooms?

seems self-defeating to me. The shrooms grown on the fruitbody substrate might be stronger than normal shrooms, but would definately not be as strong as had you simply kept the shrooms you used up making the substrate and added those to your harvest.

i've heard rumors that adding L-tryptophan to your substrate might increase potency. I have also heard of Desmanthus Illinoisis (sp?) rootbark (which contains active tryptamines, specifically DMT) in the substrate to enhance potency.

This does seem to be a waste of DMT though...

has anyone ever tried the method that I just linked? I re-read it , and it seems quite interesting - even though it's undeniably a waste of DMT, the extraction process is a bitch...so this could be a useful method.

lets also remember that althought the degree of degradation of said alkaloids in heat is disputable, it does seem to occur at high rates at verry huigh temps, such as those occuring within a PC.
as far as them roting, mushroom matter, in this case P. cubensis, is not as nutritios as the highly nutritious grians like BR and Rye so i doubt that it would highten the risk of contams as long as you where using proper clean tecniques.
so the issue seems, to me, to be whether ther would be enough alkaloids in the substrate to cause apreciably higher content in the end product.
sorry if this post seems scatterd, as i am rather tired ATM.

I think it wouldn't increase the amount of alkaloids but adding dried mushrooms of, let's say, the same family can indeed help improve mushroom growth. In fact, in nature, mushrooms die over its own mycelium and they are reabsorved as nutrients.
A little experiment could be made. Find some Ps. coprophila or Ps. merdaria (any non active Ps. specie would do)in the fields, dried them, cut them and add them to the substrate, sterilize and inoculate. In theory you'll be adding nutrients to the substrate and most probably having healthier crops.

i think [s/he] was refering to adding mushrooms of the same family.
i also think it would probably be a wast of time and, exepting for MAIA's suggestion, of perfectly good mushrooms.

I agree, it's just giving alkaloids another ride. The ride i would gave them would be inside my guts.
