Your fine. Mushrooms grow all over on cakes unless they get light from only one source. I think that the reflected light off of perlite can have somthing to do with it.

I use inverted rubbermaid/sterlite containers for my terrariums. The jars and perlite sit on top of an upside down lid, and the clear bin itself is the "lid." I just finished cutting up a large black trash bag and taping it to the outside of my "lids"; now light may only enter from the top. Even though my light source is to the side (and 12 feet away -- just a room light) from my terrariums, I think that this will solve any such problem (being my first grow, I have yet to find out).

AWG, I just rated you 5 shrooms because you are a fellow student, but it didn't seem to help.
